Pair matching & measurement report: two ribbon tweeters measured, compared and documented as a pair
Ribbon tweeters are delicate mechanical parts: a wafer-thin aluminium foil hangs in a magnetic gap, and even small differences in foil tension, gap geometry or the transformer mean that two units of the same type never play exactly alike. For stereo that matters: if the two tweeters differ in level or frequency response, the phantom centre drifts and the image loses focus, even though neither driver sounds wrong on its own.
With this service, 42.audio measures two tweeters of the same type and assembles a pair from them. We record sensitivity as the average from 3 to 15 kHz, the frequency response from 2 to 20 kHz, DC resistance and distortion K2 and K3. You receive a measurement report as a PDF documenting both drivers individually and in direct comparison. The price is per pair.
Use and enclosure
Pair matching pays off wherever two tweeters are supposed to create a stereo image together: ribbons and planar-magnetic units in floorstanders, studio monitors or an active speaker with DSP. In the DSP world the report is doubly useful – the measured sensitivities and responses give you the basis to align both channels deliberately instead of guessing at deviations. DC resistance also tells you whether the transformers of both units are alike, and the K2/K3 figures show whether one of the ribbons reaches its limits earlier at the bottom of its range.
Here is how it works: put two tweeters of the same type from the shop in your basket and add this item once. We measure both drivers under identical conditions, document the results and ship the pair together with the report. You can use the PDF later for crossover development or as proof of condition when reselling.
What to look out for
- Applies to two tweeters of the same type – price per pair
- Measured: sensitivity (average 3–15 kHz), frequency response 2–20 kHz, DC resistance, distortion K2/K3
- Measurement report as PDF, both drivers individually and in comparison
- Add this item once per pair to the basket
Frequently asked questions
Which tweeters does pair matching apply to?
Ribbon tweeters from the 42.audio range, such as the Viawave models. The requirement is that you order two units of the same type – two different models cannot be matched into a pair.
What is in the measurement report?
For each of the two drivers: the frequency response from 2 to 20 kHz, sensitivity as the average between 3 and 15 kHz, DC resistance and distortion K2 and K3. Plus a side-by-side comparison of both tweeters so you can see the deviation at a glance.
Why is the manufacturer's response curve not enough?
The manufacturer's curve describes the type, not your specific unit. Only measuring both drivers shows how closely they track each other and gives you figures you can use to fine-tune with an active crossover or DSP.
At 42.audio you get the Paarselektion & Messprotokoll (Bändchenhochtöner) with all key data in the driver database. More drivers from this manufacturer: Atlas DIENSTLEISTUNGEN.
