BEYMA 10G40: 10" guitar speaker with 3" voice coil and 400 W AES

The BEYMA 10G40 is a 10" guitar speaker from Beyma's G series, built for combos and cabinets where a single ten has to take more punishment than usual. A 400 W AES rating and a 3" voice coil are unusually generous for this format; most guitar speakers of this size run considerably smaller coils. The large coil offers more wire surface and therefore better heat dissipation, which makes it interesting for down-tuned guitars, baritone or loud stages with powerful amplifiers.

With 95 dB sensitivity and a range of 45 to 4,000 Hz it delivers what a guitar speaker should: solid fundamentals, defined mids and the typical high-frequency roll-off that makes distortion sound musical rather than harsh. The resonance frequency of 45 Hz is low for a ten; a Qts of 0.3 and a BL of 14.2 Tm point to a tightly controlled motor with plenty of force.

Use and enclosure

In the guitar world the cabinet shapes the character: open back for an airy presentation, closed box for tighter, more direct bass. The Thiele-Small parameters give you guide values for more deliberate planning: vented about 23 l tuned around 56 Hz with f3 near 63 Hz, sealed about 11 l with fc around 106 Hz. An EBP of 112 favours a vented or larger open-back enclosure over a small sealed box if you want low-end extension.

You do not need a crossover in classic guitar use: the speaker runs straight off the amplifier and limits its own top end. If you want to use it in a bass cabinet or as a low-mid driver with a tweeter, set the crossover well below 4,000 Hz. Work out the exact enclosure with the box calculator at 42.audio; the driver database supplies the parameters.

What to look out for

  • 8 Ω impedance, Re 6.3 Ω: pick the matching output tap on valve amps
  • Mounting depth 156 mm, more than many 10" speakers, check cabinet depth
  • 5.7 kg due to the large ferrite motor, bolt it properly in a combo
  • Xmax 6 mm and 3" coil: handles low tunings and bass content
  • Le 1.4 mH: relatively high inductance, adds further top-end damping

Frequently asked questions

Does the 10G40 fit a 2x10 cabinet?

Yes, as long as the cabinet depth accommodates the 156 mm mounting depth. With two 8 Ω drivers, parallel or series wiring gives a different total impedance that your amp has to handle at the appropriate tap.

Which amplifier suits the 10G40?

At 400 W AES it handles more than most guitar amps deliver. The sound matters more: a lower-powered amp drives the speaker cleanly and without risk. Its 95 dB sensitivity means even mid-sized combos get loud enough.

10G40 or 12G40?

The 12G40 brings more sensitivity, more power handling and the classic 12" voicing. The 10G40 is more compact, has more excursion at 6 mm Xmax and therefore also suits low tunings in smaller cabinets.

At 42.audio you get the BEYMA 10G40 with all key data in the driver database and the enclosure calculator. More drivers from this manufacturer: Atlas Beyma.
