Beyma 10MCF400Nd: 102 dB midrange with a 4" voice coil for 300 to 5,000 Hz

The Beyma 10MCF400Nd is not a midrange that does bass on the side; it is a pure midrange specialist. The resonance of 260 Hz, the tiny Vas of 2 l and the 300 to 5,000 Hz working range show that the suspension is deliberately stiff. In return, this 10" driver with neodymium motor delivers 102 dB sensitivity, a figure otherwise reserved for horn systems.

The 4" voice coil is exceptionally large for a 10" driver: it spreads the 400 W AES over a lot of winding area and couples to the cone over a wide diameter, reducing break-up modes in the upper midrange. The motor strength of 19.2 Tm works against a moving mass of 91 g, and Xmax is 6.3 mm. At 6.2 kg and 162 mm mounting depth, it is the heaviest MCF driver in this group, yet still manageable for horn loudspeakers.

Use and enclosure

The 10MCF400Nd is intended as a midrange horn driver or as the midrange in high-efficiency systems, for instance next to a horn-loaded bass and a 2" compression driver. As a guideline, the closed rear chamber comes out at 1.3 l with an in-box resonance of 418 Hz; the lower crossover therefore belongs well above the 300 Hz limit, in practice around the box resonance or higher, preferably with a steep slope. Towards the top the driver carries to 5,000 Hz, so a transition to the HF horn in the upper midrange is straightforward.

A vented box is out of the question at an EBP of 839; the calculated guideline of 2.8 l tuned to 229 Hz only shows how far this driver is from bass duty. Putting a midrange horn in front of the cone adds efficiency and controlled directivity. The exact rear chamber can be worked out with the 42.audio enclosure calculator.

What to look out for

  • 102 dB sensitivity: matches horn systems, needs attenuation next to conventional woofers.
  • 4" voice coil at 400 W AES: large winding area, high transient capability.
  • Fs 260 Hz and Vas 2 l: stiff suspension, usable only as a midrange from 300 Hz upwards.
  • Mounting depth 162 mm, weight 6.2 kg, neodymium magnet with BL 19.2 Tm.
  • 8 Ω nominal, Re 5.6 Ω, Le 1 mH: unproblematic for active and passive drive.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the 10MCF400Nd so much more sensitive than the 10MCB700?

The stiff suspension with 260 Hz resonance and the 4" voice coil are optimised solely for the band from 300 Hz upwards, whereas the 10MCB700 with its 75 Hz resonance still works far into the lower midrange. Giving up extension buys efficiency, and 102 dB is the result.

Does it require a horn?

No, but the 102 dB and the alignment are tailored to horn loading or high-efficiency systems. In a closed rear chamber around 1.3 l as a guideline it also works as a direct radiator, in which case its level must be matched to bass and treble.

Which crossover frequencies make sense?

At the bottom, well above 300 Hz, in practice around the in-box resonance of 418 Hz or higher with a steep high-pass. At the top, the transition to the compression driver can be placed anywhere below 5,000 Hz depending on the horn.
