Beyma 10MCS500: 10" midrange with 96.5 dB and 500 W AES for 70 to 5,000 Hz

When a 10" midrange has to cover a wide band without weight or budget getting out of hand, the Beyma 10MCS500 from the MCS series is an obvious candidate. It works from 70 to 5,000 Hz, handles 500 W AES and reaches 96.5 dB sensitivity with a ferrite motor that brings the driver to 5.7 kg.

The 2.5" voice coil and the 67 g moving mass are a compromise in favour of the upper band limit: less mass than the 3" models lets the cone work cleanly further up. Qts 0.31 at 65 Hz resonance and 24 l Vas describe a motor that is not as tight as the neodymium units of the MC series, yet remains well behaved in small closed volumes. Qms 8.1 points to a low-loss suspension.

Use and enclosure

In a 3-way system the 10MCS500 takes over the entire midrange between bass and HF horn. As a guideline for a closed midrange compartment, 5.7 l with an in-box resonance of 148 Hz comes out. Cross over at the bottom well above the 70 Hz limit, in practice above the box resonance; there the 5.5 mm of excursion is far from exhausted and the cone runs under control. At the top the range extends to 5,000 Hz, leaving room in the choice of compression driver: a 1" unit can take over higher, a 1.4" or 2" unit earlier.

With an EBP of 181 the driver is more suited to vented boxes or closed compartments with a crossover than to low bass in sealed enclosures. The vented guideline is 12 l tuned to 78 Hz, useful only for a mid-kick module; for midrange duty stay with the closed compartment. Check the design with the enclosure calculator at 42.audio.

Both are 10" midranges rated 500 W AES; the 10MC500 has a marginally tighter alignment with Qts 0.29 at the same 24 l Vas and 65 Hz resonance. In practice they sit close together, with the 10MCS500 being the lower-priced option.

What volume for the midrange compartment?

As a guideline 5.7 l closed and well damped, giving an in-box resonance around 148 Hz. Building smaller pushes the resonance up and calls for a correspondingly higher crossover.

Is the power handling sufficient for PA use?

500 W AES on a 2.5" voice coil is plenty for a midrange with 96.5 dB, because the mid band carries far less power than the bass. What matters is a clean high-pass so that low-frequency content does not eat up the excursion.
