Beyma 12CMV3: lightweight 12" midrange with 96.5 dB and 50 to 6,000 Hz
A 12" driver that works from 50 to 6,000 Hz while weighing only 4.6 kg: the Beyma 12CMV3 from the CMV series is a wide-band midrange of the kind found in instrument amplifiers, stage monitors and simple 2-way PA systems. The moving mass of 44 g is very low for a 12" cone, and that is exactly what allows the wide upper range where other 12" drivers have long given up.
The motor with 12.3 Tm is moderate, which together with the light cone gives a Qts of 0.55. That is noticeably higher than the MC and MI midranges and means a less damped motor that works well in large volumes or open baffles. Vas is 85 l, resonance sits at 52 Hz and Xmax at 7 mm. The 2.5" voice coil is rated 320 W AES, and sensitivity reaches 96.5 dB.
Use and enclosure
With an EBP of 90, closed and vented alignments are both possible, but the high Qts favours generous volumes: the guideline for a closed box is 130 l with an in-box resonance of 67 Hz. For pure midrange duty from the upper bass upwards, a much smaller closed midrange compartment is enough; the in-box resonance then rises accordingly, and the lower crossover goes well above the 50 Hz limit, in practice above the resulting box resonance.
The bandwidth to 6,000 Hz also makes the 12CMV3 interesting for 2-way designs with a high-crossed tweeter, for example a 1" compression driver on a small horn, or for guitar and bass cabinets where it runs without any crossover. With Le 0.89 mH and a cone area of 0.053 m² it beams noticeably in the upper range, which should be considered when aiming at the listening position. Is the 12CMV3 suitable for a guitar cabinet?
Yes, the combination of light cone, 96.5 dB sensitivity and bandwidth to 6,000 Hz is exactly the profile wanted in guitar and bass cabinets. The 320 W AES are enough for combos and heads alike.
How big does the enclosure need to be?
For extension, closed around 130 l as a guideline with 67 Hz in-box resonance. As a pure midrange a small closed compartment is enough, with a correspondingly higher crossover.
Which tweeter fits in a 2-way system?
