Beyma 12CXA400Fe: 12" ferrite coax with Qts 0.25, 400 W and 96 dB for small cabinets
A Qts of 0.25 on a 12" coax says a lot about intent: Beyma gave the 12CXA400Fe a strong ferrite motor with BL 19.8 Tm and a 2.87" voice coil so the driver stays controlled in compact cabinets. Key figures are 400 W AES, 96 dB sensitivity, 8 Ω and a stated frequency range of 40 Hz to 20,000 Hz for the complete coaxial system of the CXA series.
With Fs 42 Hz, Vas 94 l, Mms 66 g and an Xmax of 6 mm, the woofer is laid out for motor strength rather than excursion. The ferrite magnet system brings the driver to 11.3 kg, considerably more than its neodymium sibling, the 12CXA400Nd. In return, ferrite has an advantage that counts in installations: the magnet is forgiving of heat, and the mass damps mechanical resonances of the frame. For a studio monitor or a permanently installed box, weight is secondary anyway.
Use and enclosure
The EBP of 162 recommends bass reflex, and the tight motor keeps the volume small: guideline about 26 l net, tuned to 61 Hz, with f3 around 76 Hz. That is a 12" coax in the cabinet of a large bookshelf speaker. A sealed build ends up near 13 l with fc at 119 Hz, sensible as a sub satellite or a stage monitor with low end from a subwoofer. Since Qts 0.25 in a reflex alignment quickly produces a hump around the tuning, it pays to cross-check in the enclosure calculator at 42.audio and, if necessary, tune somewhat lower with equalisation.
The range up to 20,000 Hz makes it clear that the HF unit handles the rest; take the crossover frequency from Beyma's specifications for the CXA series. A high-pass below the tuning frequency protects the 6 mm Xmax. Suitable uses are actively driven studio monitors, installation boxes in bars and halls, and compact tops where a single driver covers the entire range.
What to look out for
- 11.3 kg ferrite: for installation and studio, less so for touring
- Qts 0.25, Vas 94 l: small reflex cabinet around 26 l as a guideline
- 2.87" voice coil, 400 W AES at 8 Ω, Re 6.6 Ω: common amplifiers are enough
- Xmax 6 mm: set a high-pass below the tuning frequency
- Le 1.1 mH: plan impedance compensation with passive crossovers
Frequently asked questions
Ferrite or neodymium, 12CXA400Fe or 12CXA400Nd?
Both have Qts 0.25 and 400 W AES. The Nd with Fs 45 Hz and Vas 88.5 l is considerably lighter and slightly more sensitive; the Fe with Fs 42 Hz and Vas 94 l weighs 11.3 kg at 96 dB. For fixed boxes the Fe is a good choice, for mobile use the Nd.
How small can the cabinet be?
The guideline is 26 l bass reflex tuned to 61 Hz with f3 around 76 Hz. Sealed it is 13 l with fc around 119 Hz. Smaller is possible but costs extension, which the enclosure calculator at 42.audio shows.
Which alternative has more extension?
The Beyma 12XA30Nd with Fs 35 Hz, Qts 0.21 and Vas 172 l goes considerably deeper but needs more volume and has 4 mm Xmax. The 12CXA400Fe with Xmax 6 mm is designed for level in a compact cabinet.
At 42.audio you get the BEYMA 12CXA400Fe with all key data in the driver database and the enclosure calculator. More drivers from this manufacturer: Atlas Beyma.

Enclosure suggestion
The EBP of 162 suggests a bass-reflex enclosure. EBP = fs / Qes = 42 / 0.26
Sealed (Qtc 0.707)
- Enclosure volume Vb
- 13.4 l
- System resonance Fc
