Beyma 12GA50: 12" loudspeaker with 102 dB and 250 W AES for instrument amplifiers

The Beyma 12GA50 is a 12" loudspeaker from the GA series with a data set that clearly separates it from the BR wideband drivers: 102 dB sensitivity, 250 W AES, 5 Ω impedance and a transmission range from 100 Hz to 18,000 Hz. A resonance frequency of 90 Hz and a Qts of 1.16 show that this is not meant to be a bass reflex woofer, but a driver that brings a pronounced region around its resonance of its own accord and is not needed above 18,000 Hz.

That combination is the signature of a guitar and instrument speaker. The high sensitivity makes a valve or transistor amplifier loud without much power applied, the 2" voice coil absorbs the 250 W AES thermally, and the high Qts keeps an audible emphasis in the low midrange when the driver sits in an open or semi-open cabinet. In hi-fi that would be unwanted; in a guitar amp it is part of the sound.

Use and enclosure

The 12GA50 belongs in a combo or extension cabinet with an open or partially open back, as is common for instrument amplifiers. A closed cabinet works as well and delivers a tighter, more direct tone; bass reflex makes no sense with Qts 1.16, because the alignment yields no clean low-frequency extension. There is deliberately no volume guideline here, since with instrument speakers the tonal result counts for more than a textbook frequency response.

The 5 Ω impedance is no problem for guitar amplifiers with a switchable output transformer, but in a combination of two or more drivers you calculate the total impedance carefully. As a hi-fi wideband driver the 12GA50 is not intended: the range only starts at 100 Hz, and the response is voiced for instrument reproduction.

What to look out for

  • 5 Ω impedance: pick the amp's output tap accordingly, work out series or parallel wiring.
  • 102 dB sensitivity: very loud with little power, good for valve amps with limited output.
  • Qts 1.16 and Fs 90 Hz: for open-back or closed cabinets, not for bass reflex.
  • 250 W AES with 2" voice coil: high thermal headroom for stage and rehearsal room.

Frequently asked questions

Is the 12GA50 a hi-fi wideband driver?

No. With a 100 Hz lower limit, Qts 1.16 and a voicing aimed at instruments, it is a guitar and instrument speaker. For hi-fi designs, Beyma's BR and FR series offer considerably lower resonance frequencies.

Which cabinet suits the 12GA50?

An open or semi-open combo cabinet is the classic route and uses the high Qts for a full tone. A closed cabinet sounds tighter and projects more directly forward. Bass reflex offers no advantage with this parameter set.

How much amplifier power does the 12GA50 need?

Little. At 102 dB a small valve amp reaches high volume, and the 250 W AES are the ceiling for continuous use. Several drivers in one cabinet share the power; what then matters is the resulting impedance from the 5 Ω per driver.

Beyma 12GA50: manufacturer, spellings and classification
