Beyma 12MC500: 12" midrange with 98 dB, 500 W AES and 8 mm Xmax
The Beyma 12MC500 is the 12" midrange of the MC series with a ferrite motor: 500 W AES, 98 dB sensitivity and a working range of 65 to 5,000 Hz. Compared with a 10" midrange, the larger cone area of 0.055 m² brings more output in the lower mids and more headroom in the kick region, making it the obvious choice for 3-way systems with a strong low end.
The parameters are well balanced: Qts 0.34 at 57 Hz resonance and 57 l Vas, a motor of 18.3 Tm acting on a moving mass of 59 g, Xmax 8 mm with a displacement of 440 cm³. The low inductance of 0.7 mH keeps the impedance rise small, so the 2.5" voice coil stays usable to 5,000 Hz. At 5.86 kg and 141 mm mounting depth the driver is compact for a ferrite 12".
Use and enclosure
In a 3-way system the 12MC500 covers the band between subwoofer and HF horn. As a guideline for a closed midrange compartment, 17 l with an in-box resonance of 119 Hz comes out; cross over at the bottom well above the 65 Hz limit, sensibly above the box resonance. At the top you can go to 5,000 Hz, but with a 12" cone the beaming makes a transition to the horn in the lower part of that range usually the better choice.
The EBP of 163 places it with vented and horn concepts rather than with low bass in closed boxes. If you are building a 2-way top with kick, the vented guideline is 39 l tuned to 63 Hz with an f3 of 67 Hz; with 8 mm Xmax the 12MC500 has more excursion for that than most pure midranges. The exact design is handled by the enclosure calculator on 42.audio.
What to look out for
- 98 dB at 8 Ω, Re 5.6 Ω: high efficiency, the amplifier does not need to be large.
- Xmax 8 mm and Vd 440 cm³: enough for kick bass in 2-way tops.
- Le 0.7 mH: small impedance rise, unproblematic for passive crossovers.
- Mounting depth 141 mm, 5.86 kg with ferrite magnet.
- 500 W AES on a 2.5" voice coil: set a high-pass below the crossover.
Frequently asked questions
12MC500 or 12MCS500: what is the difference?
Both share 57 Hz resonance, 57 l Vas, 500 W AES and 98 dB. The 12MC500 has the slightly stronger motor at 18.3 Tm and the lower inductance at 0.7 mH, giving Qts 0.34 versus 0.36 and a smoother upper midrange.
Can I use the 12MC500 in a 2-way top?
Yes, the vented guideline is 39 l tuned to 63 Hz, which lets it work as a kick-mid into the upper bass. For real low end a subwoofer still belongs underneath.
How high can I cross to the horn?
Technically up to 5,000 Hz, but with a 12" cone you would rather cross lower so the directivity of cone and horn match. A 1.4" or 2" compression driver is the typical partner.
