Beyma 12MI100: 12" midrange with 100 dB, Qts 0.22 and 450 W AES

100 dB sensitivity from a 12" cone without a horn: the Beyma 12MI100 from the MI series reaches this figure with a motor of 21.6 Tm, a very light moving mass of 47 g and an alignment designed for nothing but midrange. Xmax is only 3 mm, which clearly separates it from the MC models that can also take on kick content.

The ferrite motor brings the driver to 7.2 kg at 135 mm mounting depth. Qts 0.22 at 58 Hz resonance and 64 l Vas describe an extremely tightly controlled motor, as wanted for precise transient reproduction in the midrange. The 3" voice coil is rated 450 W AES, inductance is 1 mH, and the usable range runs from 60 to 4,000 Hz.

Use and enclosure

The 12MI100 belongs in high-efficiency 3-way and 4-way systems where a subwoofer and possibly a kick bass take everything below the midrange. The guideline for the closed midrange compartment is 6.9 l with an in-box resonance of 186 Hz. The lower crossover sits well above the 60 Hz limit, and because of the 3 mm Xmax sensibly above the box resonance with a steep slope. At the top you can use the range to 4,000 Hz, but with a 12" cone diameter the crossover to the horn is better placed well below that.

The EBP of 252 makes clear that low end is not its territory; the vented guideline of 12 l tuned to 95 Hz with f3 126 Hz describes at best a module for the upper bass, and even for that the excursion is marginal. The midrange, on the other hand, it delivers with an efficiency that matches the level of a compression driver on a horn without much attenuation. Check the design with the 42.audio enclosure calculator.

What to look out for

  • 100 dB at 8 Ω, Re 6.3 Ω: very little amplifier power needed, matches horn systems.
  • Xmax 3 mm, Vd 159 cm³: midrange only, steep high-pass mandatory.
  • BL 21.6 Tm, Qts 0.22: extremely tight motor, small closed compartments.
  • Ferrite magnet, 7.2 kg, mounting depth 135 mm.
  • 450 W AES on a 3" voice coil, Le 1 mH.

Frequently asked questions

12MI100 or 12MC700Nd?

The 12MI100 offers 100 dB and Qts 0.22, but only 3 mm Xmax and 450 W AES; the 12MC700Nd is aligned similarly with Qts 0.24, 51 Hz resonance and 58 l Vas, but has considerably more excursion and power handling and weighs about half of the 7.2 kg with neodymium. For pure midrange from the upper bass upwards the MI is the more precise choice, for kick content and weight the MC.

How low can I cross over?

Well above the 60 Hz limit and, because of the 3 mm Xmax, preferably above the in-box resonance of 186 Hz in the 6.9 l closed compartment. A steep high-pass protects the voice coil from low-frequency excursion.

Does it match a compression driver without attenuation?

At 100 dB the 12MI100 sits closer to the level of a horn driver than any other midrange in this range. Whether attenuation in the HF path is needed depends on the chosen horn and driver, but it usually stays small.

Beyma 12MI100: manufacturer, spellings and classification

Beyma and Acustica Beyma refer to the same manufacturer: Acústica Beyma S.L. of Moncada near Valencia, Spain. The 12MI100 is a 12-inch midrange driver from the MI series, available from 42.audio, Beyma dealer in Germany, with datasheet and full specifications in the driver database.
