Beyma 12P80Nd/V2: 12" neodymium woofer with 100 dB for mid-bass and horn loading

The Beyma 12P80Nd/V2 is a 12" woofer from the P series with a neodymium motor, a 4" voice coil and 700 W AES power handling. With 100 dB sensitivity and a working range of 50 to 4,000 Hz it is not a subwoofer but a mid-bass and low-mid driver for sound reinforcement: it is meant to deliver a lot of SPL from little volume in compact tops, mid-bass horns and line array elements.

What places it within the 12" class are the Thiele-Small parameters: Qts 0.19, BL 23.7 Tm and a moving mass of only 74 g at Fs 47 Hz. Such a strong motor with a light cone means high efficiency and tight control, but little inherent bass in a box – the EBP of 235 says it plainly: vented or horn, not sealed. An Xmax of 7.5 mm and 412 cm³ of displacement are enough for punchy kick bass; deep sub duty is not what this driver is made for. The neodymium magnet keeps the weight at 5.6 kg, which matters in flown systems and portable tops.

Use and enclosure

The vented guide value is 8.3 l with fb 88 Hz and f3 around 125 Hz – a typical result of the classic approximation for a driver with such a low Qts. In practice the 12P80Nd/V2 is usually given a larger box with lower tuning, for instance as the mid-bass in a 2-way top above a subwoofer, or it sits in a front-loaded horn that extends its efficiency downward. A sealed enclosure of 5.1 l with fc 175 Hz is only of interest as a pure midrange chamber in 3-way systems. Work out the exact alignment with the enclosure calculator on 42.audio.

At the top end the driver runs to 4,000 Hz; you sensibly place the crossover to the tweeter well below that so beaming and cone resonances stay out of the picture. Le of 0.9 mH is moderate for a 4" coil and keeps the impedance rise in the midrange shallow. A compression driver with a matching horn from the Beyma range is the obvious partner.

What to look out for

  • 8 Ω with Re 5 Ω: plan the amplifier for an 8 Ω load; two in parallel give 4 Ω.
  • Mounting depth 132 mm, weight 5.6 kg – shallow and light for tops and arrays.
  • 4" voice coil and 700 W AES: plenty of thermal headroom in continuous use.
  • Xmax 7.5 mm: mid-bass yes, subwoofer no – set a high-pass below the box tuning.
  • Qts 0.19 and EBP 235: a sealed box gives very little low-end extension.

Frequently asked questions

Is the 12P80Nd/V2 suitable as a subwoofer?

No. With Qts 0.19, 7.5 mm Xmax and a working range from 50 Hz it is designed as a mid-bass and kick driver. For deep bass, use a driver with more excursion and a higher Qts and let the 12P80Nd/V2 work above it.

Which amplifier suits the 12P80Nd/V2?

A channel that is stable into 8 Ω and does not continuously exceed the 700 W AES rating. More important than the last watt is a high-pass filter that stops excursion below the box tuning.

How does it differ from the 18 Sound 12ND940?

The parameters are very close: Fs 49 Hz, Qts 0.2 and Vas 64.8 l for the 18 Sound versus 47 Hz, 0.19 and 65 l for the Beyma. In terms of enclosure they are interchangeable; price, mounting dimensions and sonic preference will decide.
