Beyma 12XA30Nd: 12" neodymium coax with Fs 35 Hz, 98 dB and a light cone for point sources

Fs 35 Hz with only 47 g of moving mass: the 12XA30Nd from Beyma's XA series combines a very light 12" cone with a soft suspension and a neodymium motor with BL 15.3 Tm. The resulting Qts of 0.21 and the large Vas of 172 l are the signature of a driver intended for horn loading or for heavily damped, equalised reflex cabinets. Power handling 350 W AES, sensitivity 98 dB, 8 Ω, system frequency range 35 Hz to 20,000 Hz.

Xmax is 4 mm, displacement volume 210 cm³ over a 530 cm² cone area. That places the woofer clearly: it is optimised for speed and efficiency, not excursion. At deep-bass levels a subwoofer takes over; in the fundamental and midrange the light cone plays to its strengths. Compared with the 12CXA400Nd at Qts 0.25, Vas 88.5 l and 6 mm Xmax, the 12XA30Nd is the airier, less excursion-oriented design.

Use and enclosure

On paper the EBP of 159 recommends bass reflex, but the guideline box shows the limits of the classic approximation: about 29 l net tuned to 60 Hz with f3 around 81 Hz. That does not exploit the low 35 Hz resonance, because Qts 0.21 in small reflex cabinets produces a response with early low-end roll-off. In practice this means either a larger, low-tuned reflex box with active equalisation, or horn loading where the low Qts becomes an advantage. Sealed it is 17 l with fc around 118 Hz, the top-with-subwoofer alignment. The enclosure calculator at 42.audio helps weigh these options against each other.

The crossover to the HF unit follows Beyma's specifications for the XA series. Because Xmax is 4 mm, a steep high-pass below the cabinet tuning is indispensable. Applications are coaxial tops in sub-sat systems, horn designs for home and studio where a 12" coax covers the entire range above the bass, and installations that demand point-source radiation with high efficiency.

What to look out for

  • Qts 0.21 and Vas 172 l: candidate for horn loading or an equalised reflex box
  • Xmax 4 mm: leave deep bass to the subwoofer, set a steep high-pass
  • 98 dB at 8 Ω, Re 6.8 Ω, 350 W AES: efficient, use an amplifier with a limiter
  • 6.3 kg neodymium: light enough for flown and mobile tops
  • Le 1.3 mH: account for it in impedance linearisation with passive crossovers

Frequently asked questions

Is the 12XA30Nd a bass driver because of Fs 35 Hz?

No. The low resonance comes from the soft suspension and light cone, not from excursion headroom. With Xmax 4 mm and Qts 0.21 it is a mid-high oriented coax that hands deep bass to a sub.

Which cabinet fits best?

As a guideline, 29 l bass reflex tuned to 60 Hz with f3 around 81 Hz, or 17 l sealed with fc around 118 Hz. If you want to exploit the low Qts, evaluate horn loading or a larger, actively equalised reflex box in the enclosure calculator.

How does it compare to the B&C 12CXN76?

The B&C 12CXN76 has Fs 42 Hz, Qts 0.19 and Vas 120 l, so it is similarly tightly driven. The Beyma 12XA30Nd goes even softer in suspension with Fs 35 Hz and Vas 172 l. Both are in the driver database at 42.audio.

Beyma 12XA30Nd: manufacturer, spellings and classification

Beyma and Acustica Beyma refer to the same manufacturer: Acústica Beyma S.L. of Moncada near Valencia, Spain. The 12XA30Nd is a 12-inch coaxial driver with neodymium magnet from the XA series, available from 42.audio, Beyma dealer in Germany, with datasheet and full specifications in the driver database.

At 42.audio you get the BEYMA 12XA30Nd with all key data in the driver database and the enclosure calculator. More drivers from this manufacturer: Atlas Beyma.
