Beyma 14MC700Nd: 14" midrange with neodymium motor, 99 dB and 700 W AES

The Beyma 14MC700Nd is a 14" midrange driver from the MC series with a neodymium magnet, built for the mid section of large PA systems. 700 W AES power handling, 99 dB sensitivity and a usable range of 55 to 4,000 Hz describe a driver that can cover the whole band between a bass driver and a compression driver. The 3" voice coil provides the thermal reserve needed for sustained high-level operation.

Within the 14" class the motor stands out: a BL of 22 Tm with only 86 g of moving mass and a Qes of 0.3. That gives a Qts of 0.28 and an EBP of 170, so this is a driver designed for control and transient behaviour rather than low-frequency extension. At 4 kg the neodymium motor keeps the driver light enough for portable tops and line-array modules despite its 700 W rating.

Use and enclosure

As a guide value, a bass-reflex cabinet of about 30 l tuned to 67 Hz gives an f3 of roughly 79 Hz. For pure midrange duty a sealed midrange chamber is the better option: around 15 l gives the classic Butterworth alignment with fc at 129 Hz. Place the crossover to the bass section well above the lower limit of 55 Hz, in practice around the cabinet resonance or higher; the exact design can be worked out with the 42.audio enclosure calculator.

Towards the top the 14MC700Nd reaches 4,000 Hz, so the hand-over to a compression driver on a horn is possible without a gap. The 7 mm Xmax on 700 cm² of cone area (Vd 490 cm³) allows serious levels in the lower mids without pushing the coil out of its linear range.

What to look out for

  • 8 Ω nominal, Re 5.3 Ω: run two drivers in parallel only on amplifiers that are stable into 4 Ω.
  • Neodymium magnet: only 4 kg despite the 3" voice coil and 700 W AES.
  • Mounting depth 166 mm, Le 1 mH: low inductance for clean behaviour up to 4,000 Hz.
  • Xmax 7 mm, Vd 490 cm³: enough excursion for the lower mids, but no substitute for a subwoofer.
  • Qts 0.28 and EBP 170: not intended for sealed bass alignments with deep extension.

Frequently asked questions

Can the 14MC700Nd be used as a mid-woofer in a 2-way box?

Possible, with a caveat: in a bass-reflex cabinet of about 30 l the f3 sits at 79 Hz, so the driver does not deliver real low bass. As a mid-woofer above a subwoofer, crossed above 55 Hz, it works very well; above that a compression driver takes over at 4,000 Hz at the latest.

Which amplifier suits the 14MC700Nd?

With 99 dB sensitivity you need little power for high levels. If you want to exploit the 700 W AES continuously, plan appropriate headroom into 8 Ω; for home use much smaller amplifiers are sufficient.

Why a 3" voice coil on a midrange driver?

The large coil offers more winding area and therefore better heat dissipation, which is the basis for the 700 W AES rating. At the same time a BL of 22 Tm keeps the 86 g cone mass tightly under control, visible in the Qes of 0.3.
