Beyma 14MLEX1000Nd: 14" neodymium woofer with 1,000 W AES and 11 mm Xmax
14 inch is a format that sits between the usual 12" and 15" drivers – and that is exactly the gap the Beyma 14MLEX1000Nd from the MLEX series fills. More cone area than a 12", more compact than a 15", plus a neodymium motor with a 4" voice coil, 1,000 W AES power handling and 99 dB sensitivity. The frequency range from 50 to 4,500 Hz shows that this is a low-mid driver for powerful 2-way systems, not a subwoofer.
The parameter combination is notable: Qts 0.22, BL 26.5 Tm and Mms 107 g stand for a very strong motor, while at the same time the driver offers 11 mm Xmax – an unusually long stroke for a driver with such a low Qts. The result is a mid-bass that stays clean at high SPL and has reserves in the kick region. Fs 47 Hz and Vas 75 l complete the picture; the EBP of 204 clearly marks it as a vented and horn driver.
Use and enclosure
The classic approximation formulas give the 14MLEX1000Nd a vented guide value of 15 l at fb 77 Hz with f3 around 102 Hz. This small volume is typical for drivers with Qts around 0.22 and marks the lower limit rather than the target: for a top that has to work without a subwoofer you will build larger and tune lower, for a top above subs the compact guide value is a good starting point. As a mid-bass in a front-loaded horn you make the best use of the strong motor. A sealed chamber of 8 l with fc 151 Hz is only useful as a midrange compartment in a 3-way system. The exact alignment is done with the enclosure calculator on 42.audio.
With an upper limit of 4,500 Hz and Le 1.22 mH the crossover to the tweeter can be placed well below that limit, so beaming and cone break-up play no role. A 1.4" or 2" compression driver with a matching horn from the Beyma range is the coherent complement for a system in this power class.
What to look out for
- Mounting depth 191 mm – considerably deeper than typical 12" drivers, allow for cabinet depth.
- Weight 9.2 kg despite neodymium: the 4" motor is built solidly.
- 8 Ω nominal, Re 5.1 Ω – an amplifier around 1,000 W into 8 Ω makes sense.
- Xmax 11 mm at Qts 0.22: a lot of stroke for a mid-bass, but no subwoofer substitute.
- BL 26.5 Tm: very strong motor, needs a vented box or horn, not a sealed one.
Frequently asked questions
Why choose a 14" driver when 12" and 15" exist?
It brings more cone area than a 12" at almost the same cabinet width, without the sluggishness of a 15". The 14MLEX1000Nd thus delivers more mid-bass SPL in a top that remains manageable, and with a 4,500 Hz upper limit it needs no separate midrange.
Can I use the 14MLEX1000Nd as a subwoofer?
Not as the sole bass driver: Qts 0.22 and the working range from 50 Hz are designed for kick and mid-bass. The 11 mm Xmax helps at high levels in the upper bass, but does not replace a sub with low tuning.
What amplifier does the 14MLEX1000Nd need?
A channel delivering around the 1,000 W AES rating into 8 Ω is appropriate. Use a high-pass filter below the box tuning and a limiter in the bass, so the thermal headroom is not wasted by mechanical overload.
