Beyma 15CXA400Nd: lightweight 15" neodymium coaxial, 400 W AES, for vented boxes and monitors
Anyone looking for a 15" coaxial driver for portable cabinets soon runs into the weight question. The Beyma 15CXA400Nd weighs 7.2 kg because its motor uses neodymium, and it still delivers the same 400 W AES and 98 dB at 8 Ω as its ferrite sibling. The HF unit sits at the centre of the cone and covers the range up to 20,000 Hz, so both sections radiate from one point.
Beyma's CXA series is intended for two-way systems that need no separate tweeter. On the 15CXA400Nd, the motor with BL 19 Tm produces a Qts of 0.36 at Fs 40 Hz and Vas 196 l. That is a well-damped alignment which keeps the cone under control in the bass and pushes the design towards a vented enclosure. With Mms at 84 g the moving mass is moderate for a 15" driver, which benefits the midrange.
Use and enclosure
The EBP of 103 makes it clear: bass reflex is the natural enclosure type. As a guideline, the parameters suggest about 157 l tuned to 42 Hz, with a lower cutoff around 43 Hz. For a 15" full-range system that is compact enough for a transportable monitor or top cabinet. Sealed, roughly 69 l with a corner frequency of 79 Hz would be possible, but with noticeably less extension, so only sensible with a subwoofer underneath. Fine tuning and port length are best worked out with the enclosure calculator on 42.audio.
Applications: stage monitors that have to be light yet loud, active two-way tops, high-efficiency studio monitors and home cinema fronts, where the point-source character of a coaxial gives a stable image. The crossover between cone and HF unit is your own design; the Thiele-Small parameters for it are in the driver database.
What to look out for
- 7.2 kg: neodymium saves a noticeable amount of weight over ferrite, ideal for portable boxes.
- 8 Ω, Re 6.6 Ω, Le 1 mH: a benign load, allow for the inductance in the crossover.
- 400 W AES power handling at 98 dB: high SPL with moderate amplifier power.
- Xmax 6 mm, Sd 880 cm²: excursion headroom for vented use, but not for subwoofer duty.
- EBP 103: favour bass reflex, sealed only with subwoofer support.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference from the 15CXA400Fe?
The 15CXA400Fe has a ferrite magnet, weighs more, and with Qts 0.42 and Vas 191 l is slightly softer in its alignment, which allows a slightly deeper response. The Nd is the choice when weight counts and the cabinet should be more compact.
How does it compare to the 15XA38Nd?
The 15XA38Nd from the XA series has an even stronger motor with Qts 0.3 and Vas 238 l plus higher sensitivity, but wants a smaller, higher-tuned vented box. The 15CXA400Nd goes deeper with a 43 Hz cutoff in the guideline enclosure and is the more universal full-range coaxial.
What enclosure volume do I need?
As a vented guideline, about 157 l tuned to 42 Hz. If you want to build smaller you can reduce the volume and raise the tuning, but you lose extension. Run the variants through the enclosure calculator before you cut wood.
At 42.audio you get the BEYMA 15CXA400Nd with all key data in the driver database and the enclosure calculator. More drivers from this manufacturer: Atlas Beyma.
