With the Beyma 4FR40 it pays to look at the Qts before thinking about the enclosure: 0.88 is a high value and tells you that the motor damps the cone only weakly. Drivers like this are not made for bass reflex, but for small sealed boxes, for open baffles or for applications where electronics take care of the alignment. The 4" full-range driver from the FR series covers 100 Hz to 20,000 Hz, handles 40 W AES and delivers 87 dB.
The resonance frequency is 92 Hz, Vas is 0.55 l. Because Vas is so small, even a box of a few litres hardly changes the total Q: the driver behaves in the enclosure almost as it does in free air, and the response in the lower range is shaped mainly by the high Qts, meaning a slight hump around resonance. The 0.8" voice coil keeps mass low and lets the treble extend to 20,000 Hz.
Use and enclosure
As a full-range speaker for desktop, kitchen or workshop a small sealed box is enough; there is no volume guideline here, because with this Vas the volume is secondary and you can choose it by available space. If you want more extension, pair the 4FR40 with a subwoofer and cross well above 100 Hz, ideally steeply, because the 40 W AES are quickly used up by excursion at low frequencies.
The 4FR40 is interesting on an open baffle or in line arrangements where several drivers work in parallel and add up their area. There the high Qts is an asset, because it partly compensates the low-frequency roll-off of the open baffle. For fine tuning you will find the Thiele-Small values in the driver database at 42.audio.

Frequently asked questions
Why is the Qts of 0.88 not a drawback on the 4FR40?
Because it suits the intended use. In small sealed boxes and on open baffles a high Qts is helpful, since it compensates the bass roll-off. Only for bass reflex would it be unsuitable, and a 4" driver with Fs 92 Hz is not meant for that anyway.
Can I use the 4FR40 in a line or as an array?
Yes, that is a sensible application. Several 4FR40 in a row add area and level and make up for the 87 dB of the single driver. Watch the resulting impedance from series and parallel wiring and keep the spacing between drivers equal.
Does the 4FR40 need a tweeter?
Not necessarily, the range extends to 20,000 Hz. On axis it delivers the treble itself; off axis a 4" cone beams in the top range. If you want wide treble dispersion, add a small tweeter with a high crossover.
