BEYMA 5G40Nd/N: 5" guitar speaker with neodymium, 100 W AES and 150–17,000 Hz

Not every guitar application needs twelve inches. The BEYMA 5G40Nd/N is a 5" driver from the G series with a neodymium magnet, built for compact practice and modelling amps, small monitors and designs using several small drivers. At 1.2 kg it weighs less than many ferrite drivers of this size, and the 72 mm mounting depth allows shallow enclosures.

The frequency range of 150 to 17,000 Hz stands out. Unlike classic guitar speakers, which roll off above the presence region, the 5G40Nd/N reaches well into the treble. That makes it interesting for amps with digital cabinet simulation, where the top-end limit is already in the signal, and for applications where a single driver has to cover mids and highs. 92 dB sensitivity, 100 W AES and a 1.5" voice coil are solid figures for five inches.

Use and enclosure

With an Fs of 140 Hz and a Qts of 0.45 it is not a bass driver, nor does it need to be. Guide values from the parameters: sealed about 1 l with fc around 220 Hz, vented about 2.1 l tuned around 121 Hz. An EBP of 264 shows it suits horn loading or small vented boxes, but should leave the low notes to others.

In a multi-way system it works as a midrange in its own sealed sub-enclosure, with the low crossover well above 150 Hz. As the sole speaker in a modelling amp it runs wideband without a crossover. For arrangements of several fives the low mass is an advantage. The box calculator and driver database at 42.audio give you the fine tuning.

What to look out for

  • Neodymium magnet: 1.2 kg total, ideal for portable amps
  • 72 mm mounting depth for shallow enclosures
  • 8 Ω, Re 6.6 Ω: wire several drivers in series or parallel to suit the amp
  • Xmax 3 mm: limited bass output, high-pass filter recommended
  • Up to 17,000 Hz: treble is not self-limited as on a classic guitar speaker

Frequently asked questions

Does the 5G40Nd/N sound like a classic guitar speaker?

Only partly. Because it extends to 17,000 Hz, the typical treble roll-off that softens distortion is missing. Cabinet simulation or a filter in front gives you that character; without it, the speaker sounds more open and brighter.

Which power amplifier makes sense?

A 100 W AES rating covers practice amps and small monitors. A Class-D amplifier around the rated power is a good match; a high-pass filter is important so low-frequency content does not exhaust the 3 mm of excursion.

How does it differ from the 6G40Nd?

The 6G40Nd is one size up, reaches lower and handles more power, but stops considerably earlier in the treble. The 5G40Nd/N is smaller, shallower and wider in bandwidth.

Beyma 5G40Nd/N: manufacturer, spellings and classification

Beyma and Acustica Beyma refer to the same manufacturer: Acústica Beyma S.L. of Moncada near Valencia, Spain. The 5G40Nd/N is a 5-inch guitar speaker with neodymium magnet from the G series, available from 42.audio, Beyma dealer in Germany, with datasheet and full specifications in the driver database.

At 42.audio you get the BEYMA 5G40Nd/N with all key data in the driver database and the enclosure calculator. More drivers from this manufacturer: Atlas Beyma.
