Beyma 6B30/P: 6" wideband driver with 90 dB, 8 Ω and a range from 55 to 8,000 Hz

Six inches, 8 Ω, 90 dB and a range from 55 Hz to 8,000 Hz: the Beyma 6B30/P from the B series is a driver for the middle of the spectrum that can do considerably more at the bottom than a pure midrange. Power handling is 50 W AES, the voice coil measures 1", and at 1.2 kg it is light enough for line arrays, satellites and mobile use.

The parameters are balanced: Fs 56 Hz, Qts 0.5 from Qes 0.6 and Qms 3, Vas 15.6 l. The motor with BL 6.8 Tm moves a 14 g cone with 140 cm² of area, and Xmax 5.5 mm yields a displacement volume of 77 cm³. Inductance of 0.3 mH against Re 5.5 Ω is low, which keeps the midrange open and simplifies the crossover. The EBP of 93 says: sealed and bass reflex are both possible, with a slight lean towards the reflex box.

Use and enclosure

As a guideline for a sealed enclosure with Butterworth alignment you get about 16 l with a corner frequency of 79 Hz. That is the uncomplicated option for satellites with a subwoofer, with the crossover to the sub well above the 55 Hz, so roughly around the corner frequency. If you prefer bass reflex, simulate the alignment with the enclosure calculator at 42.audio, because the parameter set gives no blanket guideline for reflex.

In 3-way systems the 6B30/P is a midrange with reserves: a sealed midrange chamber of its own at around 16 l and a lower crossover noticeably above 55 Hz are enough for it to cover the entire vocal range. At the top the range ends at 8,000 Hz; hand over to the tweeter below that, before the 6" cone beams too much. The 90 dB match many woofers without major level correction.

What to look out for

  • 8 Ω and 90 dB: uncritical for hi-fi and small PA amplifiers, 50 W AES power handling.
  • Le 0.3 mH: low inductance, clean mids, straightforward crossover design.
  • Sealed guideline 16 l at 79 Hz: compact satellite or midrange chamber.
  • Xmax 5.5 mm and Vd 77 cm³: enough excursion for bass up to the sub hand-over.
  • Weight 1.2 kg: light for line arrays and portable boxes.

Frequently asked questions

Which enclosure suits the 6B30/P?

Sealed with about 16 l is the guideline and gives a corner frequency near 79 Hz. A bass reflex box also makes sense with EBP 93, but should be designed with the Thiele-Small parameters in the enclosure calculator rather than by rule of thumb.

Can I run the 6B30/P without a tweeter?

For speech or background music yes, the range extends to 8,000 Hz. For music with full treble, combine it with a tweeter that starts below 8,000 Hz, or with a small horn from the Beyma range.

Where do I cross the 6B30/P as a midrange?

At the bottom well above the 55 Hz, in a 3-way system typically around the corner frequency of the midrange chamber or above. At the top below the 8,000 Hz. The midrange chamber stays sealed and is built damped with about 16 l as the guideline.

Beyma 6B30/P: manufacturer, spellings and classification

Beyma and Acustica Beyma refer to the same manufacturer: Acústica Beyma S.L. of Moncada near Valencia, Spain. The 6B30/P is a 6-inch full-range driver from the B series, available from 42.audio, Beyma dealer in Germany, with datasheet and full specifications in the driver database.

At 42.audio you get the BEYMA 6B30/P with all key data in the driver database and the enclosure calculator. More drivers from this manufacturer: Atlas Beyma.

Enclosure suggestion

The EBP of 93 is in the intermediate range — either works; sealed plays tighter, bass reflex deeper and louder. EBP = fs / Qes = 56 / 0.6

Vb is the required net internal volume, Fb the tuning frequency of the reflex port and F3 the frequency at which the level has dropped by 3 dB. Calculated approximation after Small. A starting point for simulation, not a finished build plan.
