BEYMA 8G40: 8" guitar speaker with 6.5 mm Xmax, 95 dB and 250 W AES
Eight inches is the guitar-speaker format for compact combos, small bass combos and multi-driver cabinets. The BEYMA 8G40 from the G series stands out for its excursion: 6.5 mm Xmax is a lot for a guitar speaker and allows low tunings and bass content without the coil bottoming out. Add a 2.5" voice coil that carries the 250 W AES rating.
The frequency range runs from 70 to 6,000 Hz and sensitivity is 95 dB. The ferrite motor weighs in at 3.3 kg and is strongly built with a BL of 12.2 Tm. At 21 g moving mass the cone stays light; the voice-coil inductance of 1.3 mH provides the gentle top-end roll-off that distorted guitar tones need.
Use and enclosure
From Fs 70 Hz, Qts 0.36 and Vas 17 l these guide values follow: vented around 14 l tuned to 74 Hz with f3 near 76 Hz; sealed around 6 l with fc at 137 Hz. An EBP of 184 points clearly towards vented or horn-loaded designs. For a guitar combo that is guidance, not dogma; if you use the 8G40 for bass or in a small PA box, however, a calculated alignment pays off.
As a low-mid driver in a two-way system, cross over well below 6,000 Hz; at the bottom the excursion does not impose a hard limit at 70 Hz, but a high-pass filter still protects it. The 96 mm mounting depth fits shallow enclosures. Several 8G40s in a 2x8 or 4x8 cabinet add cone area; you then have to match the total impedance from 8 Ω per driver to the amp. Is the 8G40 suitable for bass guitar?
In small combos or as a supplement, yes: a 70 Hz lower limit, 6.5 mm Xmax and 250 W AES give more bass headroom than you would expect from a guitar driver this size. For deep electric bass at high levels a larger driver still makes more sense.
