Beyma 8MC500Nd: 8" neodymium midrange with 98 dB and 500 W AES for high SPL

The Beyma 8MC500Nd is an 8" midrange driver from the MC series with a neodymium motor, built for the mid band in multi-way PA systems where a single driver has to deliver serious level between the bass section and the compression driver. 98 dB sensitivity combined with 500 W AES is a pairing you normally see on larger cone sizes. The 2.5" voice coil makes it possible: it dissipates far more heat than the 2" coils typical in this class.

The Thiele-Small parameters make the intended job obvious. A Qts of 0.18 with BL of 14.5 Tm means a heavily damped motor that keeps the cone under tight control but produces very little low end on its own, which is exactly what you want from a midrange. Moving mass of 58 g is moderate for an 8" cone carrying a 2.5" coil and allows use up to 6,000 Hz. At 2.8 kg the driver stays light thanks to neodymium, a real advantage in line array elements or top cabinets that sit on poles.

Use and enclosure

The right home for this driver is a sealed midrange chamber. As a guide value, a Butterworth alignment gives a volume of around 1.1 l with an in-box resonance of 271 Hz; the crossover to the bass section should sit well above that frequency so the driver never works around its resonance. The usable range starts at 80 Hz, but the EBP of 197 confirms that low bass is not what this driver is for. At the top end the 8MC500Nd carries to 6,000 Hz, which leaves you plenty of freedom in placing the handover to a 1" or 1.4" compression driver on a horn from the Beyma range.

With Xmax of 5.8 mm and Vd of 128 cm³ the driver has more excursion headroom than many pure midranges, which keeps distortion down when the crossover is set lower. For a precise design using Fs 69 Hz, Vas 15.9 l and Qts 0.18, use the enclosure calculator at 42.audio or pull the values from the driver database.

What to look out for

  • 8 Ω nominal, Re 6.2 Ω: easy load for any PA amplifier, also two in parallel at 4 Ω.
  • Mounting depth 100 mm: fits shallow midrange chambers and line array modules.
  • 2.5" voice coil and 500 W AES: thermally robust, but always high-pass below 80 Hz.
  • Neodymium magnet: only 2.8 kg, yet BL of 14.5 Tm.
  • Qts 0.18: only makes sense in a sealed chamber or horn, not free-field.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use the 8MC500Nd as a mid-woofer in a 2-way box?

Not really. With Qts 0.18 and an EBP of 197 the motor is so heavily damped that a vented alignment only yields a guide volume of 1.7 l at fb 136 Hz. The driver is designed for midrange duty above a separate bass driver.

What amplifier suits the 8MC500Nd?

A channel delivering a few hundred watts into 8 Ω is enough to make use of the 500 W AES rating. More important than power is the high-pass filter: nothing below 80 Hz should reach the driver, otherwise the 5.8 mm of excursion is exceeded quickly.

How high can I run the 8MC500Nd?

The frequency range extends to 6,000 Hz; in practice you will cross well below that depending on horn and compression driver. The 2.5" coil with Le of 1.1 mH shows a rising impedance towards high frequencies, which you should account for in the crossover.
