Beyma CD-101Fe/PT: compact 1" compression driver with ferrite magnet and 40 W AES

The Beyma CD-101Fe/PT is a 1" compression driver from the CD series with a ferrite motor and 8 Ω nominal impedance. Rated at 40 W AES, it sits in the entry class of Beyma's HF drivers: intended for compact two-way cabinets, small monitors and speech reinforcement, where a horn with a 1" throat handles the top end without the need for a heavy high-power driver.

The resonance frequency is 2,000 Hz and the usable range extends to 20,000 Hz. That is typical of a small, light diaphragm: it reaches far up, but demands a correspondingly high crossover point. The DC resistance of 4.9 Ω confirms that the 8 Ω rating is realistic, so an amplifier with an 8 Ω output sees an easy load. At 0.5 kg the ferrite model is heavier than its neodymium siblings CD-101Nd/PT and CD-101Nd/PK, but that is irrelevant in a compact cabinet. The /PT suffix denotes the diaphragm version; the sister variant is called CD-101Fe/PK.

Use and enclosure

As a 1" driver the CD-101Fe/PT fits any horn with a 1" throat. In the Beyma range you will find suitable models in the Horns & Waveguides category; if you want to mix brands, documented 1" options include the 18Sound XT120, the XT1086 Alu or the Celestion H1SC-8050. A short horn only controls beaming at high frequencies, while a larger horn loads the driver further down and relieves it around the crossover point.

Keep the crossover well above the 2,000 Hz resonance and filter steeply; 12 dB/octave is the minimum, 24 dB/octave is safer. The 40 W AES figure describes continuous loading with band-limited noise above the crossover. Low-frequency content that reaches the diaphragm through a shallow filter is the most common cause of failure in small compression drivers. A compression driver is far more efficient than a cone driver, so an L-pad belongs in the HF branch of a passive crossover; with DSP you set the level there.

What to look out for

  • 8 Ω nominal, 4.9 Ω DC resistance: an easy load for any amplifier with an 8 Ω output.
  • Ferrite magnet, 0.5 kg: heavier than the neodymium version, but no mounting concerns in a compact box.
  • Resonance at 2,000 Hz: plan the crossover at least an octave above, with steep slopes.
  • 40 W AES: designed for small PA and monitors, not for sustained high SPL on tour.
  • 1" horn throat: compatible with 1" horns from Beyma, 18Sound and Celestion.

Frequently asked questions

Which horn fits the CD-101Fe/PT?

Any horn with a 1" throat; just check the mounting type of the horn in question. Beyma offers suitable models in its Horns & Waveguides category, and documented 1" horns from other brands include the 18Sound XT120, XR1064 Alu or Celestion H1-9040P. Choose the coverage pattern according to room and listening distance.

Where do I cross over the CD-101Fe/PT and how steeply?

The resonance is at 2,000 Hz, so the crossover must sit clearly above it. Use a filter of at least 12 dB/octave, preferably 24 dB/octave, and in a passive design add a series capacitor as extra protection against low frequencies and switch-on transients.

What is the difference between /PT, /PK and the Nd version?

The suffix identifies the diaphragm version. The neodymium versions CD-101Nd/PT and CD-101Nd/PK are lighter but stay at 40 W AES and 8 Ω. If weight is not an issue, the ferrite version is the more economical choice for the same application.
