Beyma CD-101Nd/PT: lightweight 1" HF driver for slim two-way designs

If you are looking for a 1" compression driver for a DIY project or a small installation where depth and weight decide the choice, the Beyma CD-101Nd/PT quickly comes into view. The neodymium motor brings the driver down to 0.3 kg and 44 mm mounting depth, nominal impedance is 8 Ω and power handling 40 W AES. The frequency range of 2,000 to 20,000 Hz covers the entire top end a two-way system needs above a cone mid-woofer.

The 1.1" voice coil and the 2,000 Hz resonance are the two figures that define this driver's character. A small coil means little moving mass and therefore clean decay up to 20,000 Hz, but it also means limited heat dissipation. The force factor of 3 Tm is normal for this class. Beyma offers the driver in two diaphragm variants, /PT and /PK, and as the ferrite version CD-101Fe/PT; all share the 1" throat and the same power rating.

Use and enclosure

Typical applications are two-way tops with an 8" or 10" woofer, compact nearfield monitors with a waveguide, ceiling installations and home cinema horn systems with limited space. The 1" throat fits the Beyma horns from the Horns & Waveguides category; documented 1" alternatives from other brands are the 18Sound XR1064 Alu, XT120 or Celestion H1SC-8050. For home use a waveguide with even, fairly wide coverage is advisable, because the driver then blends much better with an 8" cone in the treble than with a narrow PA horn.

Make sure the crossover sits far above 2,000 Hz with a steep filter. If the driver is coupled too low or too shallow, excursion around resonance rises sharply and the 40 W AES rating no longer means anything. The high efficiency of a compression driver requires level matching in every passive crossover, usually an L-pad, so that the treble does not play noticeably louder than the woofer.

What to look out for

  • Only 0.3 kg and 44 mm deep: fits cabinets that are too thin for classic ferrite drivers.
  • 1.1" voice coil with 3 Tm motor: light diaphragm, clear highs up to 20,000 Hz.
  • Resonance 2,000 Hz: a steep high-pass well above it is mandatory.
  • 8 Ω: no special amplifier requirements, match the level with an L-pad or DSP.

Frequently asked questions

Is the CD-101Nd/PT suitable for home cinema or hi-fi horn speakers?

Yes, provided you use a waveguide or horn with even coverage and set the crossover well above 2,000 Hz. The shallow 44 mm depth and 0.3 kg weight make it easy to mount in slim front baffles.

How does the CD-101Nd/PT differ from the CD-101Nd/PK?

Both share the motor, the 1" throat, 8 Ω, 40 W AES and the 2,000 to 20,000 Hz range. The /PT or /PK suffix denotes the diaphragm version; in use and in crossover design you treat both the same.

How much amplifier power makes sense?

40 W AES does not call for a big amplifier; what matters is a clean signal without clipping and a steep high-pass. A small power amp channel with limiter in an active setup, or a passive branch with L-pad and series capacitor, is the right environment.
