Beyma CD-10Fe/N: 1" compression driver with 1.75" voice coil and 70 W AES

With the CD-10Fe/N Beyma moves up a class within the CD series: a 1" horn throat, but a 1.75" voice coil, 70 W AES and a frequency range of 700 to 19,000 Hz. The ferrite magnet drives the diaphragm with 6.6 Tm and nominal impedance is 8 Ω. This makes it a driver for proper two-way PA cabinets with 10" and 12" woofers, not just for speech applications.

The difference from the small CD-101 models lies in the coil: 1.75" instead of 1.1" means more winding area, better heat dissipation and a larger diaphragm that reaches lower. The 700 Hz resonance allows crossover points that suit a 12" woofer; in return the range ends at 19,000 Hz, which is irrelevant for PA work. The ferrite system weighs 1.3 kg and is 62 mm deep. Beyma also offers the same construction with neodymium as the CD-10Nd/N.

Use and enclosure

The CD-10Fe/N belongs on a 1" horn in a two-way cabinet where the woofer no longer radiates cleanly above the midrange. Beyma lists suitable horns in its Horns & Waveguides category; documented 1" throats also include the 18Sound XT1086 Alu, XR1064 Alu, XT120 or Celestion H1SC-9040. A horn with a larger mouth loads the driver better around the crossover and lets you exploit the lower limit; a short waveguide pushes the sensible crossover point upwards.

Plan the crossover at least an octave above 700 Hz and filter at 12 dB/octave or steeper. The 70 W AES rating is a continuous figure for noise above the crossover. In a passive design the efficiency gap to the woofer calls for an L-pad in the HF branch; in an active system the DSP handles level, high-pass and limiter. The weight difference to the Nd version hardly matters at 1.3 kg for installed cabinets, but it does for portable tops.

What to look out for

  • 1.75" voice coil: 70 W AES and a much lower crossover than 1.1" drivers allow.
  • Resonance 700 Hz: crossover at least an octave above, steep high-pass.
  • Ferrite, 1.3 kg, 62 mm mounting depth: no drawback in installed boxes, somewhat heavier in a top.
  • 8 Ω nominal: works on any PA amplifier, level matching via L-pad or DSP.
  • 1" throat: fits 1" horns from Beyma, 18Sound and Celestion.

Frequently asked questions

Does the CD-10Fe/N suit a 12" woofer?

Yes, that is exactly its intended use. The 700 Hz resonance permits a crossover that makes sense with large woofers, as long as you keep an octave of headroom and filter steeply. For 8" woofers with a high crossover the smaller CD-101Fe/PT is also sufficient.

What is the difference from the CD-10Nd/N?

Both have a 1" throat, 1.75" coil, 70 W AES, 8 Ω and 700 to 19,000 Hz. The CD-10Nd/N uses a neodymium magnet and is lighter; the ferrite CD-10Fe/N is the more economical choice when weight is not decisive.

Which horn is recommended?

For music reinforcement, a horn whose mouth is large enough to load down to the crossover region, such as an 18Sound XT1086 Alu or a Beyma horn from the Horns & Waveguides category. Choose the coverage pattern according to room width and listening distance.
