Beyma CD-11Nd: 1" neodymium compression driver, 47 mm shallow, 70 W AES
47 mm mounting depth with a 1.75" voice coil: the Beyma CD-11Nd is the neodymium version of the CD-11 and shows how much space the compact magnet saves. At 1.3 kg it is also lighter than its ferrite brother CD-11Fe. The electrical data stay the same: 70 W AES, 8 Ω, 700 to 19,000 Hz and a 1" horn throat.
For two-way tops that are flown or carried, every kilo and every centimetre behind the horn counts. That is exactly where the CD-11Nd comes in. The 1.75" coil ensures the driver is not only light but also works low enough to match a 12" woofer. The 700 Hz resonance marks the lower limit below which diaphragm excursion rises sharply; crossed well above it, the driver stays in the thermally and mechanically safe region.
Use and enclosure
Mount the CD-11Nd on a 1" horn from Beyma's Horns & Waveguides category or on a documented 1" horn such as the 18Sound XT1086 Alu, XR1064 Alu, XG10 Alu or Celestion H1-9040P. In a slim box a horn that also needs little depth pays off; with 47 mm of driver depth the result is a very compact HF module. For lower crossover points choose a horn with a larger mouth that loads the diaphragm in the crossover region.
The crossover frequency sits at least an octave above 700 Hz, the high-pass filter at 12 dB/octave or more, in DSP at 24 dB/octave. The 70 W AES rating applies to filtered noise; full-range signals or a shallow high-pass shorten the life of any compression driver. In a passive design you reduce the level with an L-pad to match the woofer, in an active one you use the DSP's level, delay and limiter.
