Beyma CD-14Fe: 1.4" compression driver with 2.5" coil from 500 Hz

The Beyma CD-14Fe is the 1.4" driver of the CD series with the large 2.5" voice coil. Its frequency range starts at 500 Hz and extends to 16,000 Hz, power handling is 60 W AES and nominal impedance 8 Ω. The ferrite magnet produces a 9.1 Tm force factor and brings the driver to 3.3 kg at 62 mm mounting depth.

A 2.5" coil shifts the priorities: the large diaphragm allows a 500 Hz resonance and therefore lower crossover points than drivers with a smaller coil, but it also brings more moving mass, which is why the range ends at 16,000 Hz. That is the typical layout of a mid-high driver for large two-way systems or for the mid-high section of three-way designs where a 12" woofer should not be pushed far up. The neodymium version is called CD-14Nd and is considerably lighter.

Use and enclosure

The CD-14Fe belongs on a 1.4" horn with a sufficiently large mouth so that the 500 Hz lower limit becomes usable at all. Beyma lists suitable models in its Horns & Waveguides category; documented 1.4" horns from other brands are the 18Sound XT1464, XR1464C, XR1496C, PR614 and H860 3D Print. A small waveguide wastes this driver's potential because it offers no support below its loading limit.

Set the crossover at least an octave above 500 Hz, with 12 dB/octave as the minimum and 24 dB/octave in active operation. For a 2.5" coil the 60 W AES rating is a conservative continuous figure for filtered noise. Above 16,000 Hz the driver delivers nothing more, which three-way systems with an additional super tweeter deliberately exploit. The 3.3 kg weight requires solid bolting to the horn and, in flown boxes, proper consideration of the load points. In a passive design you attenuate with an L-pad, in an active one you set level and delay in the DSP.

What to look out for

  • 2.5" voice coil, 500 Hz resonance: low crossover possible, upper limit 16,000 Hz.
  • Ferrite, 9.1 Tm, 3.3 kg: strong motor, account for the weight at the horn and rigging points.
  • 60 W AES, 8 Ω: works on any PA amplifier, crossover at least an octave above 500 Hz.
  • Mounting depth 62 mm: usually uncritical behind a 1.4" horn.
  • 1.4" throat: fits 1.4" horns from Beyma and 18Sound.

Frequently asked questions

Which systems is the CD-14Fe intended for?

Large two-way boxes with a 12" woofer and the mid-high section of three-way systems. The 2.5" coil and the 500 Hz resonance allow a low crossover; if you need treble up to 20,000 Hz, add a super tweeter or choose a driver with a smaller coil.

What distinguishes the CD-14Fe from the CD-14Nd?

Both have a 1.4" throat, 2.5" coil, 60 W AES and 8 Ω. The neodymium CD-14Nd is considerably lighter and shallower and its range starts slightly higher; the CD-14Fe goes lower at 500 Hz and is the more economical choice for fixed installations.

Which horn gets the most out of the CD-14Fe?

A 1.4" horn with a large mouth that loads down to the crossover region, for example the 18Sound XT1464 or XR1496C or a Beyma horn from the Horns & Waveguides category. The lower you want to cross over, the larger the mouth must be.

Beyma CD-14Fe: manufacturer, spellings and classification
