Beyma CD-14Nd: 1.4" neodymium driver with 2.5" coil, 10 Tm and only 1.9 kg

If you want the 2.5" coil of the CD-14 but not its ferrite weight, the Beyma CD-14Nd is the answer. The neodymium motor reaches 10 Tm and brings the driver to 1.9 kg at 49 mm mounting depth. The 1.4" horn throat, 60 W AES and 8 Ω remain the same; the frequency range is 600 to 17,000 Hz.

Compared with the ferrite model CD-14Fe the range shifts slightly upwards: the lower limit is 600 Hz, slightly higher than on the ferrite model, but the driver reaches 17,000 Hz. The higher force factor of 10 Tm versus the ferrite model means more force on the large diaphragm and thus better control of its decay. All in all the CD-14Nd is the driver for portable two-way systems with a 12" woofer and for line-array or flown applications where the 2.5" diaphragm is wanted but every kilo counts.

Use and enclosure

The CD-14Nd needs a 1.4" horn whose mouth is large enough to load down to the crossover region. Beyma lists suitable horns in its Horns & Waveguides category; documented 1.4" horns from other brands are the 18Sound XT1464, XR1464C, XR1496C, XG14 Alu and H860 3D Print. With 49 mm mounting depth, shallower cabinets are possible than with the ferrite model.

Set the crossover at least an octave above 600 Hz, with 12 dB/octave as the lower limit; in DSP operation 24 dB/octave makes sense, supplemented by a limiter and delay alignment to the woofer. The 60 W AES rating is a continuous figure for filtered noise and conservative for a 2.5" coil. Above 17,000 Hz the driver stops; in systems that need the last bit of treble you add a super tweeter. In a passive design an L-pad belongs in the HF branch, because efficiency on a 1.4" horn far exceeds that of a woofer.

What to look out for

  • Neodymium, 10 Tm, 1.9 kg: strong motor at far less weight than the CD-14Fe.
  • 2.5" coil, 600–17,000 Hz: mid-high driver for 12" two-way and 3-way systems.
  • Mounting depth 49 mm: shallower than the ferrite model, good for compact tops.
  • 60 W AES, 8 Ω: crossover at least an octave above 600 Hz, steep filter.
  • 1.4" throat: fits 1.4" horns from Beyma and 18Sound.

Frequently asked questions

When is the CD-14Nd the better choice over the CD-14Fe?

When weight or depth matter: 1.9 kg and 49 mm against a much heavier ferrite model. The CD-14Nd has the stronger motor at 10 Tm and reaches 17,000 Hz, but starts slightly higher at 600 Hz.

How low can I cross over the CD-14Nd?

The lower limit is 600 Hz; in practice you cross at least an octave above that and steeply. How low it really goes is determined by the horn: only a sufficiently large mouth loads the 2.5" diaphragm in the crossover region.

Which 1.4" horn fits?

Any horn with a 1.4" throat, at Beyma from the Horns & Waveguides category, across brands for example the 18Sound XT1464 or XR1496C. Check bolt pattern and mounting type, and choose the coverage according to room and throw.

Beyma CD-14Nd: manufacturer, spellings and classification
