Beyma CD-2514Fe/PK: 1.4" compression driver with 2.5" voice coil from 600 Hz

With the CD-2514Fe/PK, Beyma's CD series steps up into the 1.4" class. The ferrite driver uses a 2.5" voice coil, handles 80 W AES at 8 Ω and covers a range from 600 Hz to 20,000 Hz. Compared with a 1" driver, that buys you one thing above all: a lower limit that sits a good step further down, plus a larger diaphragm that needs less excursion per unit of level in the midrange.

The motor delivers a BL of 6.3 Tm, the unit weighs 3.5 kg and needs 62.7 mm of mounting depth. PK denotes the diaphragm variant; the same driver is also available as the CD-2514Fe/PT and as the CD-2514Fe/Ti with a titanium diaphragm, and with a neodymium motor as the CD-2514Nd range. 42.audio carries all variants, so you can pick the right one for your project by comparing figures side by side in the driver database.

Use and enclosure

A 1.4" driver with a working range from 600 Hz is the classic partner for two-way cabinets with a 12" woofer, where a 1" driver becomes thin in the transition region. As a guideline for the crossover: well above 600 Hz with a steep high-pass; how low you can actually go depends on the horn. A large horn with a low loading frequency permits a lower crossover than a compact waveguide.

Horns with a 1.4" interface are available in Beyma's horns and waveguides category; from the 18SOUND range, the XT1464, the XR1496C for wide coverage or the XR1464C for tighter directivity are options, as are the PR614 and the H860 3D Print, all with a 1.4" throat. With 3.5 kg of driver mass, the horn must be properly secured to the cabinet; the 62.7 mm mounting depth adds to the horn depth.

What to look out for

  • 1.4" horn interface: fits 1.4" horns only, not 1" or 2" flanges.
  • 2.5" voice coil with 80 W AES: thermally more capable than a 1" driver with a smaller coil.
  • 3.5 kg ferrite motor: design the cabinet and horn mounting accordingly.
  • Mounting depth 62.7 mm: allow for it behind the horn, especially in shallow cabinets.
  • 8 Ω impedance: compatible with any PA amplifier, including two drivers in parallel.

Frequently asked questions

When is the CD-2514Fe/PK worth it over a 1" driver?

As soon as the crossover needs to sit below what a 1" driver handles cleanly, or when you want more reserve at a given crossover point. The 1.4" exit and the 2.5" voice coil are what allow the working range from 600 Hz. The price is weight, mounting depth and a larger horn.

How do the CD-2514Fe/PK, /PT and /Ti differ?

All three use the same ferrite motor with a 2.5" voice coil, 80 W AES, 8 Ω and identical dimensions. The difference is the diaphragm: Ti stands for titanium, PK and PT are the two other diaphragm variants. Choose by tonal character, not by power handling, which is the same.

Which amplifier do I need for the CD-2514Fe/PK?

A channel that works cleanly into 8 Ω; the 80 W AES is a continuous rating, and with music the HF branch draws considerably less. What matters is a steep high-pass well above 600 Hz. A DSP with a limiter is the most convenient solution.
