Beyma CD-314Nd/Ti: 3" voice coil, 1.4" exit, 90 W AES at only 1.8 kg

A 1.4" driver with a 3" voice coil that weighs less than many a 1" ferrite driver: the Beyma CD-314Nd/Ti tips the scales at 1.8 kg because its motor uses neodymium. With a BL of 10 Tm, the motor is the strongest in the CD family considered here; power handling is 90 W AES at 8 Ω, the working range runs from 600 Hz to 20,000 Hz. The diaphragm is titanium.

Compared with its ferrite sibling, the CD-314Fe/Ti, the Nd/Ti saves not only weight but also depth: 50.6 mm. That makes it the shallowest driver in the family and at the same time the one with the largest voice coil. For touring tops that cross low with 12" woofers and still need to stay portable, that is a rare combination. 42.audio has the CD-314Nd/Ti and its ferrite twin in the driver database with a direct comparison of the key figures.

Use and enclosure

Its place is the high-output touring top or the large stage monitor: two-way, 1.4" horn, crossover well above 600 Hz with a steep high-pass. The 3" voice coil and the 90 W AES let the HF section work harder in the transition region than 2.5" drivers should; a horn with a low loading frequency makes that usable. Beyma has 1.4" horns and waveguides in its own category, and alternatively the 18SOUND XT1464, XR1464C, XR1496C, PR614 or the H860 3D Print fit.

The shallow 50.6 mm mounting depth helps with flat wedges and with cabinets where the horn already eats up depth. Neodymium does not like sustained overheating: a DSP limiter protects the voice coil and the magnet alike. The 8 Ω are uncritical for any amplifier.

What to look out for

  • 1.8 kg with a 3" voice coil: the neodymium motor makes the driver light enough for touring.
  • Mounting depth 50.6 mm: the shallowest driver in the family, ideal for wedge monitors.
  • BL 10 Tm: strongest motor in the range, good for a low crossover on a large horn.
  • 90 W AES at 8 Ω: run with a steep high-pass and a limiter.
  • 1.4" horn interface: mount only on horns with a 1.4" throat.

Frequently asked questions

What does the CD-314Nd/Ti offer over the CD-2514Nd/Ti?

A 3" instead of a 2.5" voice coil, 90 W AES and the stronger motor at BL 10 Tm. That means more thermal reserve and more drive in the lower working range. The weight stays the same at 1.8 kg, and the 50.6 mm mounting depth is actually less.

Ferrite or neodymium for the CD-314/Ti?

The CD-314Nd/Ti weighs 1.8 kg and is 50.6 mm deep, the CD-314Fe/Ti is several times heavier and deeper. Power handling, impedance and frequency range are the same; the Nd has a slightly stronger motor at BL 10 Tm. For cabinets on the move the Nd is the clear choice; in a fixed installation the weight does not matter.

Which horn and which crossover for the CD-314Nd/Ti?

A 1.4" horn, preferably with a low loading frequency so the 3" voice coil is put to use. Beyma offers matching horns and waveguides, and from 18SOUND the XT1464, XR1464C, XR1496C, PR614 and H860 3D Print fit. Cross well above 600 Hz, steep high-pass, limiter.
