Beyma CD1S: compact 1" compression driver rated 30 W AES for small horn systems

The CD1S is the smallest member of Beyma's CD series: a compression driver with a 1" horn exit, 8 Ω nominal impedance and a power rating of 30 W AES. At 0.6 kg it is light enough to sit in small monitors, column speakers or ceiling installations where a full-size PA driver would simply be too big and too heavy.

Within its category the CD1S is clearly positioned as a driver for moderate levels. Its resonance frequency of 2000 Hz is comparatively high, which points to a light, stiffly suspended diaphragm. That is not a shortcoming but a design decision: drivers like this are meant for the upper octaves, not for midrange duty from a few hundred hertz upwards. If you are planning a small two-way horn system with a cone driver running up into the presence region, this is an economical and lightweight high-frequency partner.

Use and enclosure

The 1" exit is the most common horn standard, so the choice of horns is wide. At 42.audio suitable candidates include the 18Sound XT120, the 18Sound XT1086 Alu or the Celestion H1SC-9040, plus Beyma's own horns in the Horns & Waveguides category. Check the bolt pattern of the horn before ordering, because 1" drivers come with different flanges depending on the manufacturer.

The crossover has to sit well above the 2000 Hz resonance, and it has to be steep: a 30 W driver does not forgive a low crossover with a shallow slope. A high-pass at 24 dB/octave, passive or in a DSP, is the safe route. With active drive, keep the amplifier small or use a limiter; a series protection capacitor makes sense even in active setups.

What to look out for

  • 8 Ω nominal impedance: works on any common amplifier output, passive or active.
  • 30 W AES power rating: a steep high-pass is mandatory, this is not a full-throttle PA driver.
  • 0.6 kg weight: barely adds load to small cabinets and horn adapters.
  • Resonance frequency 2000 Hz: place the crossover well above it.
  • 1" horn exit: check the horn's flange and bolt pattern in advance.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of projects is the CD1S meant for?

Compact two-way cabinets, monitors or installation speakers with a small horn where maximum SPL is not the goal. Its low weight and 30 W AES rating make it a tweeter for modest rooms, not for concert sound reinforcement.

Which amplifier suits the CD1S?

At 8 Ω and 30 W AES a small power amp is plenty. Protection matters more than power: a high-pass well above 2000 Hz and, in active systems, a limiter or a series capacitor against switch-on thumps and operator error.

Which horn should I choose?

Any 1" horn with a matching bolt pattern, for example the 18Sound XT120 or the Celestion H1SC-9040, as well as the Beyma horns from the Horns & Waveguides category. Smaller horns with a higher cut-off frequency match the high crossover point of this driver well.
