Beyma FD-212: passive crossover rated 600 W AES for two-way PA

600 W AES power handling at 1 kg: the Beyma FD-212 is a passive two-way crossover from the FD series, built to run on high-power PA amplifiers. Compared with Beyma's F series that is a power class higher, which in practice means capacitors and inductors are dimensioned for higher voltages and currents without the inductors saturating or the capacitors reaching their voltage limit.

High power is where the quality of a passive crossover's construction shows. An iron-cored inductor can saturate on current peaks and then generate distortion, an underrated capacitor in the HF branch can fail under continuous load. A crossover rated 600 W AES has to avoid both reliably. Beyma tunes the FD-212, like all FD networks, for specific driver combinations from its own catalogue, which 42.audio also carries.

Use and enclosure

Typical applications are passive two-way tops and high-output stage monitors combining a Beyma woofer with a Beyma compression driver on a horn. One amplifier channel per cabinet, no DSP presets, no mix-ups in rental use, those are the arguments for the passive approach in PA. The crossover's 600 W AES suits woofers of the upper power class, so the network does not become the bottleneck of the system.

Before you build in the FD-212, find out which drivers Beyma intends it for, because crossover frequency and HF attenuation are fixed and cannot be readjusted. Compare the data of the candidate drivers in the driver database at 42.audio. On installation the leads get a gauge suited to the power, and the board is bolted down so it does not work loose under daily transport.

What to look out for

  • FD series, passive two-way crossover rated 600 W AES.
  • 1 kg weight despite the high power class.
  • For high-power Beyma woofers with a compression driver on a horn.
  • Crossover frequency and attenuation are fixed, use only with the intended drivers.
  • Design cable gauge and mounting for touring use.

Frequently asked questions

How does the FD-212 differ from the other FD-series two-way crossover with the same rating?

Both belong to the FD series and are identical in rating and weight at 600 W AES and 1 kg. They differ in tuning, meaning crossover frequency and attenuation for different driver combinations. Which one you need depends on the Beyma drivers you want to build with.

Is a crossover rated 600 W AES enough for an amplifier with more power?

The rating refers to continuous power. A stronger amplifier is fine as long as a limiter prevents crossover and drivers from running above their ratings continuously. Short transients are no problem for a crossover in this class.

Can I use it to split off a subwoofer?

No, the FD-212 splits between woofer and HF unit inside a two-way cabinet. The split to a subwoofer is done by an active controller ahead of the amplifier.
