Beyma FD-250: passive two-way FD-series crossover rated 600 W AES

If you build a passive PA cabinet with Beyma drivers you need a crossover that actually passes the drivers' power through. The FD-250 from Beyma's FD series is rated 600 W AES and weighs 1 kg, placing it in the upper power class of passive two-way crossovers in the Beyma range. It distributes the signal of one amplifier channel to woofer and HF unit, attenuates the HF branch to the woofer's level and keeps low frequencies away from the compression driver.

The number in the name says nothing about crossover frequency or driver size, it is a model designation. What matters is the tuning: Beyma lays out each FD crossover for specific combinations of woofer and compression driver, and only there do filter point, level ratio and phase through the transition line up. A passive crossover on foreign drivers will produce sound, but rarely a clean frequency response.

Use and enclosure

The field of use is two-way tops and monitors for stage, rental and fixed installation where one amplifier channel per cabinet is wanted. Compared with an active solution you save amplifier channels, DSP configuration and sources of wiring errors. The 600 W AES rating gives you room for woofers with high power draw, so the crossover does not hit its limit before the drivers do.

Before buying, find out which drivers Beyma intends for the FD-250 and compare their sensitivity and impedance in the driver database at 42.audio. Inside the cabinet the crossover sits protected and firmly bolted down, away from magnets and with leads whose gauge suits the power. A quick measurement after assembly confirms that the transition between woofer and HF unit runs without a dip.

What to look out for

  • Passive two-way crossover from the Beyma FD series, 600 W AES.
  • 1 kg weight, suitable for touring cabinets and installations.
  • The model number is not a statement of crossover frequency or driver size.
  • Use only with the driver combinations Beyma intends.
  • Measure the frequency response through the transition after installation.

Frequently asked questions

FD-250 or its equally rated sibling, how do I decide?

Both crossovers are specified identically at 600 W AES and 1 kg. The difference is the tuning for different Beyma drivers. Tell 42.audio which woofer and compression driver you want to build with and the right crossover can be determined.

Is a passive crossover still current in PA?

For two-way tops and monitors, yes. One channel per cabinet, no presets and robust technology are tangible advantages in rental and installation. If you need maximum flexibility in crossover and equalisation, go active.

Which amplifier suits the FD-250?

A PA amplifier whose power is aligned with the drivers' rating and the crossover's 600 W AES. A limiter in the signal chain protects crossover and drivers alike from sustained overload.

At 42.audio you get the BEYMA FD-250 with all key data in the driver database. More drivers from this manufacturer: Atlas Beyma.
