Beyma FD-2CX: passive crossover for Beyma coaxial drivers, 500 W AES

The CX in the name stands for coaxial, and that is exactly what the Beyma FD-2CX is made for: a passive two-way crossover that runs the LF cone and the compression driver of a Beyma coaxial from a single amplifier channel. With 500 W AES power handling and 1 kg weight it is designed for PA monitors and full-range cabinets in which the coaxial covers the entire frequency range.

Coaxial drivers place special demands on a crossover. The compression driver sits in the centre of the cone and radiates through its profile or a short horn, which affects its frequency response and impedance. On top of that, the level difference between HF unit and cone is typically large in coaxials, and the phase of both branches has to line up at the transition, otherwise a notch appears in the response. Beyma has tuned the FD-2CX for its own coaxial drivers, and that is where it belongs.

Use and enclosure

Classic applications are stage monitors, where a coaxial is especially popular for its point-source character and shallow depth, and compact full-range cabinets for installations and mobile sound. The passive crossover turns the cabinet into a single-channel system: amplifier into the crossover, crossover into the two terminals of the coaxial. That saves the DSP preset, the second amplifier channel and the risk of swapping cone and HF unit when wiring.

Which Beyma coaxial the FD-2CX is intended for should be settled before buying, because the level alignment only fits the intended combinations. The coaxial data is in the driver database at 42.audio. For the enclosure, the Thiele-Small parameters of the respective coaxial count, the crossover itself has no influence on the volume. The board sits firmly bolted inside the cabinet, away from the magnet.

What to look out for

  • Passive two-way crossover for Beyma coaxial drivers, 500 W AES.
  • 1 kg weight, compact enough for wedge cabinets.
  • Level alignment and crossover point are tuned for specific Beyma coaxials.
  • One amplifier channel per cabinet, no DSP required.
  • Do not swap cone and HF terminals when wiring.

Frequently asked questions

Does the FD-2CX fit every Beyma coaxial?

No. Beyma tunes the crossover for specific coaxial drivers, because sensitivity, impedance and crossover frequency differ from model to model. Ask 42.audio which coaxial belongs to the FD-2CX before ordering.

What distinguishes the FD-2CX from the FD-2CXFe?

The FD-2CXFe is intended for Beyma's coaxials with ferrite magnet and carries a somewhat lower rating, the FD-2CX is rated 500 W AES. Both are two-way crossovers for coaxials but tuned for different drivers.

Can I run the coaxial actively instead?

Yes, with two amplifier channels and a DSP that handles the split and the levels. The FD-2CX is the passive alternative that gets by with one channel and works without configuration.

At 42.audio you get the BEYMA FD-2CX with all key data in the driver database. More drivers from this manufacturer: Atlas Beyma.
