Beyma FD-2CXFe: crossover for Beyma ferrite coaxials, 400 W AES, 1 kg
Beyma builds its coaxial drivers in variants with neodymium and with ferrite magnets, and the FD-2CXFe is the passive two-way crossover for the ferrite versions. The Fe in the name takes up the chemical symbol for iron, which Beyma also uses on the drivers to mark ferrite versions. Rated 400 W AES at 1 kg, the crossover is meant for coaxial systems where minimum weight matters less than a rugged, cost-conscious overall package.
A crossover for coaxial drivers has to serve two branches that physically share one axis: the LF cone and the compression driver in its centre. The HF branch is padded down to the level of the cone, and the crossover point is placed so the compression driver receives no signal below its working range. Because Beyma's ferrite coaxials have different sensitivities and impedance curves than the neodymium models, they get a crossover of their own instead of a universal solution.
Use and enclosure
The FD-2CXFe belongs in passive coaxial cabinets as built for stage monitors, small full-range speakers and installation boxes. One amplifier channel, one crossover, one coaxial, that is the entire signal chain, and it works without DSP and without presets. For rental companies and installers that is an argument, because the cabinet runs on any amplifier and nobody on site has to load a configuration. The 400 W AES is more than adequate for the power handling of many coaxial drivers.
Check before buying which ferrite coaxial Beyma intends for the FD-2CXFe, the driver data is in the driver database at 42.audio. Ferrite coaxials are heavier than their neodymium counterparts, so plan cabinet and handles accordingly. The crossover itself weighs 1 kg and is bolted inside the cabinet away from the magnet system, with the leads to cone and HF unit clearly labelled.
What to look out for
- Passive two-way crossover for Beyma coaxial drivers with ferrite magnet, 400 W AES.
- 1 kg weight, rugged solution for monitors and installations.
- Not interchangeable with the FD-2CX, different driver tuning.
- One amplifier channel per cabinet, no DSP needed.
- Label the leads to cone and HF unit clearly.
Frequently asked questions
Why is there a separate crossover for the ferrite coaxials?
Because ferrite and neodymium versions of a coaxial have different sensitivities and impedance curves. A crossover tuned for the neodymium model would miss the level ratio and the transition on the ferrite model. The FD-2CXFe is laid out for the ferrite drivers.
Is 400 W AES enough for a PA coaxial?
For most coaxial drivers run passively in monitors or small tops, yes. The power handling of the coaxial is the deciding figure anyway, and a limiter ahead of the amplifier protects both components.
Can I use this crossover on a Beyma neodymium coaxial?
Not advisable. For the neodymium coaxials there is the FD-2CX, tuned for their data. Clarify the assignment with 42.audio if you are unsure which driver you have.
At 42.audio you get the BEYMA FD-2CXFe with all key data in the driver database. More drivers from this manufacturer: Atlas Beyma.
