The Beyma SMC-60 brings the 2" horn exit into the compact SMC series. With a 2.85" voice coil, 80 W AES power handling at 8 Ω and a frequency range of 500 Hz to 18,000 Hz it is the driver for applications where the crossover should be low without requiring a heavy 4" driver. Its 4.5 kg weight and 75 mm mounting depth are moderate for a 2" ferrite driver.
The motor delivers a BL of 8.8 Tm. So the SMC-60 is not designed for maximum force but for a balanced relationship between power handling, depth and price. Typical applications are two-way tops for fixed installation, mid-high horns in three-way systems and replacement duty in existing 2" systems where a shallow driver is needed.
Use and enclosure
2" horns at 42.audio include the 18Sound XR2064C and Beyma's Horns & Waveguides category. The larger the horn, the further the crossover may move towards 500 Hz, but the lower limit remains a limit. With a 24 dB/octave high-pass keep an octave of headroom, more with shallower filters.
The 18,000 Hz upper limit is normal for a 2" driver with this diaphragm size and entirely sufficient for sound reinforcement. If you add a separate tweeter above it in a three-way system, you can run the SMC-60 as a pure midrange horn driver well within its range, which benefits both power handling and distortion. On the amplifier side an 8 Ω channel in the 80 W AES class is enough, with a limiter in active systems. At 4.5 kg, bracing to the cabinet is advisable when the horn is made of plastic.
