Beyma SMC-65: 1.4" compression driver with 50 W AES, 700–18,000 Hz and ferrite magnet
Between the 1" drivers for small cabinets and the 2" models for large horns sits the 1.4" format, and the Beyma SMC-65 is its representative in the SMC series. It combines a 2.85" voice coil with a ferrite magnet (BL 8.8 Tm), handles 50 W AES at 8 Ω and covers 700 Hz to 18,000 Hz. At 4.2 kg and 66 mm mounting depth it is a compact driver well suited to stationary use.
The combination of 1.4" exit and 2.85" voice coil appears in several Beyma ranges; the SMC-65 is the affordable ferrite version of it. For two-way tops with a 12" cone where the high-frequency section should start in the upper midrange, this is a sensible package: the 1.4" throat allows a lower crossover than 1", while the diaphragm stays more manageable than with 2" and delivers up to 18,000 Hz.
Use and enclosure
Suitable 1.4" horns at 42.audio are the 18Sound XT1464, the 18Sound XR1464C and the 18Sound XR1496C, plus the Beyma horns in the Horns & Waveguides category. At 4.2 kg the driver should be additionally braced to the cabinet when used with plastic horns; with aluminium horns this is less critical.
The 700 Hz lower limit demands headroom: with a 24 dB/octave high-pass the crossover should sit at least an octave above it. At 50 W AES that is not a precaution but a prerequisite for continuous operation. On the amplifier side an 8 Ω channel in the 50 W AES power class is enough, active with a limiter, passive with a series capacitor ahead of the high-pass. The 66 mm mounting depth leaves room for a crossover behind the horn.
What to look out for
- 1.4" horn exit: lower crossover than 1" with a more manageable diaphragm than 2".
- 2.85" voice coil with ferrite magnet, BL 8.8 Tm: 4.2 kg.
- 50 W AES at 8 Ω: cross over well above 700 Hz with a steep slope.
- Mounting depth 66 mm: compact for the 1.4" class.
- Upper limit 18,000 Hz: sufficient for PA and installation.
Frequently asked questions
SMC-65 or SMC-65Nd, what is the difference?
Same throat, same 2.85" voice coil. The SMC-65 uses ferrite, weighs 4.2 kg and works from 700 Hz to 18,000 Hz; the SMC-65Nd is the much lighter neodymium version with a stronger motor and wider frequency range. For stationary projects the ferrite driver is enough.
How low can I cross the SMC-65?
700 Hz is the lower limit. With a steep high-pass the crossover frequency should sit at least an octave above it; the larger the horn, the closer you can get to the limit.
Which power amp is suitable?
An 8 Ω channel in the region of the 50 W AES rating, with a limiter in active use. More power gives no benefit with compression drivers, only more risk to the voice coil.
