Beyma SMC-65Nd: 1.4" neodymium compression driver at 2.2 kg, 50 W AES and BL 11.3 Tm
Half the weight, a stronger motor, a wider frequency range: the Beyma SMC-65Nd is the neodymium version of the 1.4" driver with 2.85" voice coil in the SMC series. It weighs 2.2 kg, delivers a BL of 11.3 Tm and works from 600 Hz to 20,000 Hz. Power handling is 50 W AES at 8 Ω, and mounting depth is a scant 53 mm.
That a neodymium magnet makes a driver lighter is well known. More interesting is what a BL of 11.3 Tm means in practice: more motor force on the same diaphragm means higher efficiency and tighter control over the diaphragm near the lower usable limit. That is exactly why the SMC-65Nd's lower limit sits at 600 Hz while its ferrite sibling SMC-65 starts higher. For portable two-way cabinets with a 12" cone this is an attractive package.
Use and enclosure

For the crossover, 600 Hz is the lower limit, not the target. With 24 dB/octave the high-pass should sit at least an octave above it; the 50 W AES can only be used continuously with clean filtering. Active systems need a limiter, passive ones a series capacitor ahead of the high-pass. An 8 Ω channel in the 50 W AES class is sufficient; at this efficiency more power is risk rather than reserve.

Which horn suits the SMC-65Nd?
Any 1.4" horn with a compatible bolt pattern, for example the 18Sound XT1464 or XG14 Alu, or a Beyma horn from the Horns & Waveguides category. For a crossover near 600 Hz the horn should be large enough to still load the driver there.
How much amplifier power makes sense?
