Beyma T-2030: T-series dome tweeter with 60 W AES and 5 Ω
The Beyma T-2030 is a dome tweeter from Beyma's T series, designed for professional use: 60 W AES power handling, 5 Ω nominal impedance and a resonance frequency of 1,500 Hz. Unlike a compression driver, a dome radiates directly – no phase plug, no horn – which gives wide, even dispersion without horn colouration.
The AES rating matters for putting the figure in context: 60 W AES means the tweeter withstands this power continuously with a noise signal – a far stricter criterion than the programme or music ratings often quoted in the hi-fi world. For a dome tweeter that is a solid reserve, though one you can only use together with a suitably high and steep crossover. The 5 Ω have to be taken into account when designing the network, because a crossover calculated for a different nominal impedance will not work without recalculation.
Use and enclosure
Typical tasks are the treble section in compact PA cabinets, speech reinforcement, installation loudspeakers and monitors where a compression driver on a horn would be too large or too directional. The T-2030 also makes sense in serious DIY when you need a robust tweeter with wide dispersion, for instance above a mid-sized mid-woofer in a two-way configuration.
For the crossover the usual rule for domes applies: at least an octave above resonance, so clearly above 1,500 Hz, and with a steep filter – 12 dB per octave is the minimum here, 24 dB relieves the dome noticeably. The lower you cross, the less of the 60 W AES is really available to you, because the dome's excursion rises quickly towards the bottom of its range. With a 5 Ω nominal impedance you scale the coils and capacitors of the network accordingly; the driver database at 42.audio helps you match it to the mid-woofer.
What to look out for
- 5 Ω nominal impedance – calculate the crossover for this value, do not reuse a standard template
- 60 W AES: continuous rating to a strict standard, usable only with a steep crossover
- Resonance frequency 1,500 Hz – set the crossover well above it
- Dome instead of horn: wide dispersion, no horn equalisation needed
Frequently asked questions
Which amplifier suits the T-2030?
Any power amp that is stable into a 5 Ω load – in practice every PA amplifier rated for 4 Ω. The 60 W AES rating is the yardstick; in a passive two-way system only a fraction of the amplifier power reaches the tweeter anyway.
What sets the T-2030 apart from the larger models in the T series?
The other two domes in the T series handle more power at the same nominal impedance. The T-2030 is the choice when 60 W AES is enough, for instance in smaller cabinets or for speech. On all three models the crossover frequency must sit well above resonance.
Can I run the T-2030 without a crossover?
No. A dome without a high-pass receives the full low-frequency energy and will be destroyed. A series capacitor is the bare minimum; sensible is a filter with 12 or 24 dB per octave and a crossover frequency clearly above 1,500 Hz.
