Beyma TD-8060: 130 g horn rated 80 W AES for compact cabinets
130 grams. The Beyma TD-8060 weighs less than most of the compression drivers you would mount on it, and yet it is rated at 80 W AES. That makes it a horn for designers who allocate every centimetre and every gram in small enclosures: compact two-way tops, column speakers, ceiling installs, small monitors. At this weight the body is necessarily plastic.
Within Beyma's TD series the TD-8060 is the lightest model at 42.audio. The range covers horns and waveguides for compression drivers, and the TD-8060 fills the niche where a cast horn would simply be too big and too heavy. The power figure also shows that the horn is not meant as a toy – 80 W AES is a design rating for serious drivers.
Use and enclosure
A horn in this weight class depends on its mounting: place it flat on the baffle, bolt it at all provided points and avoid stressing the plastic. If the body becomes audible in operation, a thin layer of damping material on the back of the horn walls usually solves it. The compression driver comes from the Beyma range; throat diameter and bolt pattern are not stored as attributes and should be cross-checked in the 42.audio driver database before buying.
Compact horns only control the radiation from comparatively high frequencies upwards. So do not cross over too low: a high-pass with a steep slope and adequate margin above the driver's resonance matters more with a small horn than with a large one, because below that point the driver works without horn loading. The 80 W AES describe the horn's design rating; for the system's power handling the driver counts.
What to look out for
- Weight 0.13 kg – hardly any effect on cabinet weight or ceiling suspension.
- Rated 80 W AES; the system limit is the compression driver you mount.
- Plastic body: bolt at all points, damp the rear if needed.
- Small horn – cross over rather high, steep high-pass with margin above driver resonance.
Frequently asked questions
Which cabinets is such a light horn intended for?
Compact two-way tops, column and ceiling speakers and small monitors. At 130 g the TD-8060 is practically weight-neutral, so the driver defines the mass in the HF section.
Which driver fits the TD-8060?
A Beyma compression driver with matching exit diameter and mounting pattern. Neither value is stored as an attribute for the horn – check them in the 42.audio driver database.
How low may I cross over with the TD-8060?
Rather high than low. Small horns lose pattern control early towards the bottom, and the driver then runs without acoustic load. Keep the high-pass clearly above the driver's resonance and use a steep slope.
Beyma TD-8060: manufacturer, spellings and classification
Beyma and Acustica Beyma refer to the same manufacturer: Acústica Beyma S.L. of Moncada near Valencia, Spain. The TD-8060 is a horn / waveguide from the TD series, available from 42.audio, Beyma dealer in Germany, with datasheet and full specifications in the driver database.
At 42.audio you get the BEYMA TD-8060 with all key data in the driver database. More drivers from this manufacturer: Atlas Beyma.
