Beyma TPL-200/H: horn-loaded AMT with 104 dB sensitivity and 120 W AES for PA
At 104 dB sensitivity the Beyma TPL-200/H operates in a range normally reserved for compression drivers. It is the horn-loaded version of the large TPL model: the horn attachment couples the pleated diaphragm to the air more efficiently, raises efficiency and gives the radiation a defined direction. 120 W AES power handling and a working range from 1,000 Hz to 23,000 Hz complete the picture.
Why an AMT instead of a compression driver at all? A compression driver forces air through a phase plug and a narrow chamber, which generates distortion at high level. The air-motion transformer achieves its velocity transformation through the folding of the foil itself, without a compression chamber. The diaphragm has almost no mass, no voice coil and no former, which keeps the decay clean. The horn on the TPL-200/H uses this motor and provides the directivity needed for reinforcement over longer distances.
Use and enclosure
The TPL-200/H is made for two-way PA tops with high-sensitivity woofers, for hi-fi horn systems with matching bass horns, and for studio main monitors at longer listening distances. Cross it well above 1,000 Hz. In reinforcement systems a 24 dB/oct. high-pass and a limiter are recommended; 12 dB/oct. is only sufficient with a high crossover and moderate levels. The 120 W AES rating refers to filtered programme above the crossover.
The horn defines the coverage, so aim it at the listening zone and mount it upright. Because of the high 104 dB sensitivity, passive networks need a properly rated voltage divider; in active systems a small channel with a good signal-to-noise ratio is enough. 42.audio carries Beyma and lists the TPL models with and without horn side by side in the driver database, so sensitivity and dispersion can be compared directly.
What to look out for
- 104 dB sensitivity: very high output, level matching to the woofer is mandatory.
- 120 W AES power handling for filtered signal above the crossover.
- Usable from 1,000 Hz, cross well above it, high-pass at least 12 dB/oct.
- The horn narrows dispersion: aim at the listening zone, mount upright.
- Response up to 23,000 Hz.
Frequently asked questions
Can the TPL-200/H replace a compression driver in a PA top?
In two-way tops crossed well above 1,000 Hz, yes: 104 dB and 120 W AES are enough for medium-sized reinforcement. The woofer, however, must play cleanly up to the crossover, because the TPL-200/H does not work below 1,000 Hz.
What separates the TPL-200/H from the TPL-200/B?
Same AMT driver, same 120 W AES, same 1,000 to 23,000 Hz range. The /H has the horn and reaches 104 dB with controlled dispersion; the /B works without a horn, wider and with less output.
Is the TPL-200/H also good for hi-fi?
Yes, especially in horn systems with high-sensitivity bass sections. With ordinary hi-fi woofers you have to pad the level down considerably, and a low-noise amplifier is important because 104 dB makes any residual hiss audible.
At 42.audio you get the BEYMA TPL-200/H with all key data in the driver database. More drivers from this manufacturer: Atlas Beyma.
