Beyma TPL-75: compact AMT tweeter with 92 dB and 40 W AES for hi-fi and monitors
The Beyma TPL-75 is the smallest model in the TPL series and the entry point to Beyma's air-motion transformers. At 92 dB sensitivity it sits where good hi-fi domes sit, but brings 40 W AES power handling and a working range from 1,000 Hz to 23,000 Hz. Beyma uses the same technology here as in the large TPL drivers, just with a smaller diaphragm area.
The pleated foil with its conductor tracks sits in the magnetic field and is not moved as a whole; the folds close and open and push the air out at a multiple of the foil velocity. The advantage over a dome lies in the lower moving mass combined with a larger radiating area, which benefits transient response and low distortion. The smaller foil of the TPL-75 radiates wider in both planes than its big siblings, which makes it particularly suited to compact cabinets and nearfield listening.
Use and enclosure
The classic application is a two-way loudspeaker with a mid-woofer around 92 dB sensitivity, whether a bookshelf, a floorstander or a nearfield monitor. It also works as the tweeter in three-way systems above a midrange, provided the crossover sits well above 1,000 Hz. A 12 dB/oct. high-pass is the minimum; if you go closer to the lower limit or listen loud, choose 24 dB/oct. As with all AMTs, the 40 W AES rating applies only to the filtered signal.
Mount the TPL-75 upright, even though its shorter diaphragm narrows vertical dispersion less than the large TPL models. Flush mounting in the baffle and a short distance to the mid-woofer keep the transition clean. In passive networks the level usually matches ordinary hi-fi woofers without a large voltage divider. 42.audio carries the complete TPL range and lists it in the driver database, so you can compare sensitivity and power handling directly.
What to look out for
- 92 dB sensitivity: matches hi-fi mid-woofers directly, hardly any padding needed.
- 40 W AES for filtered signal above the crossover.
- Lower limit 1,000 Hz: cross well above it, high-pass at least 12 dB/oct.
- Smallest diaphragm in the series: wide dispersion, compact cabinets possible.
Frequently asked questions
Which speakers is the TPL-75 suited to?
Compact two-way loudspeakers, nearfield monitors and three-way systems crossed well above 1,000 Hz. With 92 dB and 40 W AES it is designed for hi-fi and studio levels, not for sound reinforcement.
How does the TPL-75 differ from the larger TPL models?
It has the smallest diaphragm in the series, hence less sensitivity and power handling, but wider dispersion and a smaller footprint. The large models are meant for high levels and low crossovers; the TPL-75 is for living rooms and nearfield work.
Which amplifier suits the TPL-75?
Any stable, low-noise power amplifier. 40 W AES above the crossover is rarely reached in hi-fi use; what matters is a clean high-pass that keeps low frequencies away from the AMT.
