Beyma WL4Fe/N: 0.8" compression driver with waveguide, ferrite and 70 W AES
The Beyma WL4Fe/N follows the modular logic of the WL series: a 0.8" compression driver whose waveguide is part of the package, so directivity and throat matching do not depend on the user. This variant has a ferrite magnet, handles 70 W AES, is rated at 5 Ω and has its resonance frequency at 700 Hz.
That gives the WL4Fe/N two qualities that often exclude each other: the low Fs of the WL4 and higher power handling. A ferrite motor has more mass and bulk than neodymium, but it provides a thermally stable field – under sustained load in installation use, the efficiency drifts less. 70 W AES from a 0.8" throat is a solid figure, because the small diaphragm limits the cooling area; anyone needing more has to move to 1" drivers with a separate horn and accept the extra depth.
Use and enclosure
Place the crossover at least one octave above 700 Hz, which is a region a 6" mid-bass driver hands over without trouble. Steep filters are mandatory so that no energy below the crossover reaches the small diaphragm; passive networks at 12 dB/octave are the minimum, 18 or 24 dB/octave are better. That makes the WL4Fe/N suitable for 2-way cabinets in fixed installation, for sound reinforcement in small rooms, churches and conference spaces, and for monitors where a shallow high-frequency section is wanted.
On the amplifier side, 5 Ω is harmless for any 4 Ω-capable power amp; for passive crossovers, work with the real impedance curve rather than a standard value. The waveguide sits directly in the baffle; the mounting opening follows its outer dimensions. For a comparison with the other WL variants and further Beyma compression drivers, the driver database on 42.audio is the place to look.
What to look out for
- 70 W AES: higher power handling than the WL4 at the same Fs
- Ferrite magnet: thermally stable, heavier than neodymium
- 5 Ω nominal impedance: account for it in a passive crossover
- Fs 700 Hz: cross at least one octave above, with steep filtering
Frequently asked questions
WL4Fe/N or WL3/Fe?
Both have a ferrite magnet, 70 W AES and 5 Ω. The WL4Fe/N sits lower at 700 Hz Fs and allows a lower crossover; the WL3/Fe with its higher resonance is for systems that cross high anyway. For a low handover from a mid-bass driver, the WL4Fe/N is the better choice.
Which amplifier fits?
Any that drives 4 Ω loads. Its power should match the 70 W AES rating or be held back by a limiter – compression drivers die from clipping and crossing too low, not from nominal amplifier power.
Can I swap the waveguide for a different horn?
No, the WL series is designed as a unit. If you need a free choice of horn, Beyma's compression drivers with a 1" throat and the matching horns and waveguides are the way to go.
