Celestion AN2775: 2.75" full-range driver with 84 dB, neodymium and weatherproof aluminium cone
If you need a driver for column speakers, line sources or compact near-field boxes that offers more cone area than a 2" unit yet can still be packed tightly, the Celestion AN2775 is the obvious candidate. This AN-series full-range driver combines a rigid aluminium cone with 28 cm² of area, a half-roll elastomer surround and a neodymium magnet in a square chassis of glass-reinforced ABS.
84 dB sensitivity at 8 Ω, 20 W AES or 40 W continuous, and a response from 160 to 20,000 Hz – that is the profile. An integrated waveguide keeps the treble dispersion wider than the cone alone could, and the weatherproof build takes it outdoors. At 0.1 kg the driver is light enough that ceiling modules or columns made of many units stay mechanically uncritical.
Use and enclosure
Fs 123.3 Hz, Qts 0.959, Vas 3.57 l: the high Qts tells you that a bass reflex alignment makes little sense. The EBP of 106 lands in reflex territory on paper, but a driver with this much total Q responds sluggishly to a tuned volume and peaks around resonance. A small sealed compartment is the robust choice; the volume can sit well below Vas, since the in-box resonance will end up above 160 Hz anyway, where the specified range begins. The enclosure calculator at 42.audio gives you exact figures.
Cross the AN2775 over to a woofer or subwoofer with a high-pass well above 160 Hz. Upwards it runs without a filter to 20,000 Hz; if you want to flatten the treble of a column made of many drivers, use DSP or a simple shelving network. 2.25 mm Xmax is the linear excursion you have to work with.
What to look out for
- 8 Ω, Re 5.26 Ω – match the total impedance of several drivers to the amplifier
- Mounting depth 45 mm, cutout 66.1 mm – shallow enclosures possible
- Xmax 2.25 mm – set the high-pass above 160 Hz
- Only 0.1 kg thanks to neodymium – good for ceiling modules and long columns
Frequently asked questions
Is the AN2775 suitable for a loudspeaker column?
Yes, that is what it was built for. The square chassis allows small gaps between the cones, and the waveguide keeps the treble dispersion wide. A separate driver handles the bass below 160 Hz.
What amplifier does the AN2775 need?
20 W AES per driver is plenty; the high-pass filter is what matters. With several drivers, work out the total impedance from your series and parallel groups and pick the amplifier accordingly.
What separates the AN2775 from the next size up in the series?
The next size up in the AN series is larger, has a thicker voice coil and brings more sensitivity and power handling, but does without the integrated waveguide. The AN2775 stays more compact and is noticeably lighter at 0.1 kg.
