Celestion AN3510: 3.5" full-range driver with 1" voice coil, 87 dB and 35 W AES

35 W AES, 87 dB at 8 Ω, 98 to 18,500 Hz – the Celestion AN3510 is the 3.5" full-range driver of the AN series and thus the unit to pick when a single driver already has to deliver a useful level. The 1" voice coil on a polyimide former handles 70 W continuous; aluminium cone, elastomer surround and the square ABS chassis are built weatherproof.

Unlike the smaller models in the series, the AN3510 does without an integrated waveguide. In return it brings more low-mid headroom with 38 cm² of cone area and 4.56 Tm of motor force, and with Qts 0.646 it drops neatly into a sealed box. For near-field monitors, desktop speakers, speech reinforcement and compact columns that is a solid foundation.

Use and enclosure

As a guide value for a sealed enclosure with a Butterworth alignment you get 9.5 l and an in-box resonance of 124 Hz. In practice you will usually build smaller – a volume below the Vas of 1.87 l raises the resonance, which is harmless for a midrange or a near-field system with a subwoofer. The EBP of 153 hints at reflex suitability, but with Fs at 113.4 Hz the gain in extension is small; the sealed compartment remains the clean solution. Fine-tune with the enclosure calculator at 42.audio.

Without a subwoofer the AN3510 runs from 98 Hz; with a woofer underneath, set the crossover well above 98 Hz so that the 2.25 mm Xmax is not wasted on bass. No filter is needed upwards – the driver runs through to 18,500 Hz.

What to look out for

  • 8 Ω nominal, Re 5.73 Ω – match series/parallel array wiring to the amplifier
  • 1" voice coil, 35 W AES, 70 W continuous
  • Mounting depth 50 mm, cutout 78.8 mm, weight 0.16 kg
  • Xmax 2.25 mm – relieve it in the bass with a high-pass
  • Weatherproof: aluminium cone, elastomer surround, ABS chassis

Frequently asked questions

Does the AN3510 work as a full-range driver for a desktop speaker?

Yes. With 87 dB and a range from 98 Hz it delivers enough level and body in the near field. In a small sealed box – 9.5 l as a guide value, less is fine – it works without any crossover.

Which enclosure type suits the AN3510?

A sealed box. Qts 0.646 and Fs 113.4 Hz argue against bass reflex; the in-box resonance sits above the free-air resonance anyway. The guide volume of 9.5 l can be undercut considerably for midrange compartments.

How does the AN3510 differ from the smaller model with waveguide?

The smaller model has a thinner voice coil and an integrated waveguide for wider treble dispersion. The AN3510 offers more cone area, more power handling and higher sensitivity.
