Celestion Axi2050: 2" driver with a 5" voice coil, 300 Hz to 20 kHz without a midband crossover

With the Axi2050, Celestion takes a different route from classic 2" compression drivers. The titanium diaphragm has a circumferentially corrugated so-called AxiPeriodic geometry with an integrated surround that decouples vibration modes from acoustic modes. The result is a single driver that works from 300 Hz to 20,000 Hz and needs no additional crossover between mid and high frequency drivers. The neodymium motor drives a 5" voice coil wound with aluminium wire, power handling is 150 W AES (300 W programme) and sensitivity is 108 dB.

What sets the Axi2050 apart within its category is the combination of bandwidth and diaphragm area. A 5" coil is unusually large for a 2" exit and provides the area you need to couple cleanly at a few hundred hertz. The sculpted diaphragm avoids break-up in the critical listening band, where multi-part diaphragms typically show resonance peaks. At 7.5 kg and 111 mm mounting depth the driver is a heavy component despite the neodymium magnet, which is down to the size of the motor and diaphragm.

Use and enclosure

The 2" horn exit calls for a horn that loads down to a few hundred hertz, i.e. a large mouth and a correspondingly long flare. In the Horns & Waveguides category at 42.audio you will find horns with a 2" throat, among them the 18SOUND XR2064C; when combining across brands, check the mounting style and bolt pattern of the flange. A small 2" horn as used in standard PA cabinets for crossovers above 1 kHz throws away the real advantage of this driver.

The typical application is a two-way system with a large woofer that does without a separate midrange driver. The crossover should sit well above 300 Hz and use steep filters; DSP-controlled active operation with high-pass and limiter is the most sensible mode here, because with 150 W AES and a low crossover the issue is diaphragm excursion, not just heat. For studio main monitors and high-end horn systems where a single driver is meant to cover the whole vocal and treble range, this is the most interesting use case.

What to look out for

  • 8 Ω, 150 W AES and 300 W programme: a powerful amp channel with a limiter makes sense.
  • 7.5 kg weight: horn, flange and cabinet rear panel must carry it; do not hang the driver off the baffle alone.
  • Allow 111 mm mounting depth behind the horn flange.
  • 5" voice coil with aluminium wire and titanium diaphragm with integrated surround, no separate surround material.
  • Only run it on a horn that acoustically supports the low crossover above 300 Hz.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Axi2050 really work without a midband crossover?

Yes, the driver is designed to work as one unit from 300 Hz to 20,000 Hz. The only crossover you need is the one to the woofer. The prerequisite is a horn that loads low enough.

Which horn belongs on the Axi2050?

A 2" horn with a large mouth and long flare so that loading extends down into the lower crossover region. In the 42.audio range the 18SOUND XR2064C is a horn with a 2" throat; match bolt pattern and mounting first.

Which amplifier should I plan for?

With 108 dB sensitivity the driver needs little power for high SPL; the 150 W AES is an upper limit, not a target. More important is a clean high-pass and a limiter, ideally in a DSP active system. An amplifier with headroom that does not clip protects the diaphragm more than raw wattage.
