Celestion CDX1-1010: 1" ferrite compression driver with 107 dB for small two-way cabinets
The Celestion CDX1-1010 is the entry point into the CDX series: a 1" compression driver with a ferrite magnet, a 1" voice coil and a single-piece PETP film diaphragm in which diaphragm and surround are formed from one piece. It is rated at 15 W AES (30 W programme), delivers 107 dB sensitivity at 8 Ω and works from 1,500 Hz to 20,000 Hz. It is intended for compact two-way loudspeakers, small sound reinforcement cabinets and applications that need a robust HF driver without much fuss.
The PETP diaphragm is the heart of this driver. Polyester film is insensitive to humidity and rough handling and sounds less harsh than thin metal diaphragms, which is an advantage with simple passive crossovers. The voice coil wire is copper-clad aluminium, which keeps moving mass low. At 0.8 kg and 52.8 mm mounting depth the CDX1-1010 is handy despite the ferrite magnet, and thanks to 107 dB it has enough output for cabinets with mid-woofers of typical sensitivity.
Use and enclosure
Celestion specifies a minimum crossover frequency of 2,200 Hz at 12 dB/oct. With steeper filters you can go a little lower, with shallower ones you have to go higher; at 15 W AES the rule is: better an octave of safety margin above the 1,500 Hz lower limit than a new diaphragm every week. A resistor network in the passive crossover matches the 107 dB to the woofer.
As a 1" driver the CDX1-1010 fits the Celestion horns H1SC-8050 and H1SC-9040 as well as the H1-7050 'No Bell' and H1-9040P, which 42.audio also carries; check the mounting style of the respective horn. For near-field and monitor use a wide-dispersion horn makes sense, for throw over distance a narrower pattern so that energy is not wasted on ceiling and floor.
What to look out for
- 15 W AES / 30 W programme: little power reserve, high-pass no shallower than 12 dB/oct and a limiter in active use.
- 8 Ω impedance, 107 dB sensitivity: a level pad is usually needed in the passive crossover.
- Only 52.8 mm mounting depth and 0.8 kg, also suitable for shallow cabinets.
- PETP diaphragm with integrated surround: robust against humidity and handling.
- Ferrite magnet: heavier than neodymium, but unaffected by heat in operation.
Frequently asked questions
How does the CDX1-1010 differ from the CDX1-1070?
Both are 1" ferrite drivers with PETP diaphragm and the same minimum crossover frequency. The CDX1-1010 is the slightly more powerful and more sensitive of the two. If you are calculating tightly on power handling, take the 1010.
Is 15 W AES enough for a PA cabinet?
For small cabinets at moderate levels, yes, because 107 dB sensitivity means you need little power. For loud stages or DJ use you should choose a higher-rated driver from the CDX series. A clean high-pass matters more than the wattage.
Which horn fits the CDX1-1010?
Any Celestion 1" horn with the matching mounting, such as the H1SC-8050 or H1SC-9040 from the 42.audio range. For small two-way cabinets a wide dispersion pattern is more pleasant in the near field. The horn choice also affects how low you can sensibly cross over.
