Celestion CDX1-1412: 1" neodymium driver with 1.4" coil, 35 W AES at just 0.36 kg

0.36 kg and 34.5 mm mounting depth: the Celestion CDX1-1412 is built for portability. This 1" compression driver from the CDX series combines a neodymium magnet with a 1.4" voice coil and a single-piece polyimide diaphragm with integrally formed surround. It handles 35 W AES (70 W programme), delivers 106 dB at 8 Ω and covers 1,500 Hz to 20,000 Hz.

The 1.4" coil is the reason this small driver has more power handling than the ferrite models with a 1" coil from the same series: more winding area, more diaphragm area, better heat dissipation. Polyimide withstands higher temperatures than PETP and is still a damped film without the resonance sharpness of metal. Within the CDX1 range the 1412 is therefore the model for active compact cabinets, column speakers and mobile systems where weight in the cabinet and in the case matters.

Use and enclosure

Celestion quotes 2,000 Hz as the minimum crossover frequency at 12 dB/oct. That is half an octave above the 1,500 Hz lower limit and realistic for a 1.4" coil driver. In a DSP active system with 24 dB/oct you can approach the 2,000 Hz mark; passively with 12 dB/oct you are better off staying above it and adding an attenuator, because 106 dB sensitivity is above most mid-woofers.

The 1" throat fits the Celestion horns in the 42.audio range: H1-7050 'No Bell', H1-9040P, H1SC-8050 and H1SC-9040. Thanks to the shallow 34.5 mm mounting depth the CDX1-1412 also suits very slim cabinets in which a ferrite driver simply would not fit. Make sure the horn's mounting style matches the driver; the sister model CDX1-1413 has the same electrical data and differs in weight, i.e. in its build variant.

What to look out for

  • 35 W AES / 70 W programme at 8 Ω: a small active channel with high-pass and limiter is enough.
  • Only 0.36 kg: neodymium magnet, ideal for mobile cabinets and columns.
  • 34.5 mm mounting depth, fits very shallow enclosures.
  • Polyimide diaphragm with integrated surround: more heat-resistant than PETP.
  • Minimum crossover 2,000 Hz at 12 dB/oct; steeper filters add safety.

Frequently asked questions

CDX1-1412 or CDX1-1413: what is the difference?

Electrically and acoustically both are identical: same coil, diaphragm, power handling and sensitivity. The difference lies in the build variant and weight. Check which version suits your horn and its mounting.

Which amplifier suits the CDX1-1412?

An amp channel with considerably less power than the LF section, since 106 dB sensitivity needs little. What matters is a clean high-pass from 2,000 Hz and a limiter so that clipping does not overload the polyimide diaphragm. 35 W AES is the limit, not the operating point.

Which cabinets is this driver meant for?

Active compact cabinets, column speakers and mobile systems where weight and mounting depth are decisive. With a Celestion 1" horn such as the H1SC-8050 it becomes a two-way system with controlled dispersion. For very loud stages there are higher-rated models in the series.
