Celestion CDX1-1425: 1" neodymium driver with aluminium diaphragm, 108 dB and copper shorting ring

Within the CDX series, the Celestion CDX1-1425 relies on an aluminium diaphragm with an elastomer surround instead of plastic film. That brings more stiffness and thus more resolution in the upper treble, while the soft surround damps the diaphragm at its edge. On top of that there is a copper shorting sleeve on the pole piece which reduces voice coil inductance and keeps the response more even towards high frequencies. This 1" driver has a neodymium magnet, a 1.4" voice coil, 25 W AES (50 W programme), 108 dB sensitivity at 8 Ω and a frequency range of 2,000 Hz to 20,000 Hz.

At 0.39 kg it is about as light as the polyimide models in the series, but at 58 mm it is deeper. Its character is different: higher sensitivity and more clarity up top, but a higher lower frequency limit. The CDX1-1425 is therefore an HF driver for two-way systems in which the mid-woofer plays cleanly past 2 kHz anyway, such as cabinets with a smaller cone, and for applications where precise treble matters.

Use and enclosure

Celestion specifies 2,500 Hz as the minimum crossover frequency at 12 dB/oct, clearly above the 2,000 Hz lower limit. Take that seriously: an aluminium diaphragm forgives overload below its working range less readily than a film does. With 24 dB/oct in a DSP you can approach the limit; passively you are better off staying somewhat above it and adding an attenuator because of the 108 dB.

The 1" throat fits the Celestion horns at 42.audio, including H1SC-8050, H1SC-9040, H1-9040P and H1-7050 'No Bell'; the mounting style must match the driver. The higher-rated sister model CDX1-1430 has the same diaphragm and the same shorting sleeve but twice the power handling. If you need headroom in SPL and amplifier power, the 1430 is the choice; for compact cabinets, horn-loaded studio near-field designs and installations with controlled levels the 1425 is enough.

What to look out for

  • 25 W AES / 50 W programme: high-pass from 2,500 Hz, steeper filters protect the aluminium diaphragm.
  • 108 dB sensitivity at 8 Ω: needs little power, a passive attenuator is almost always required.
  • 58 mm mounting depth, deeper than the polyimide models of the series.
  • 0.39 kg thanks to neodymium, good for mobile cabinets.
  • Copper shorting sleeve: lowers inductance for a more even treble response.

Frequently asked questions

How does the CDX1-1425 differ from the CDX1-1430?

Both have the same aluminium diaphragm, the copper shorting sleeve, 108 dB and the same minimum crossover frequency. The CDX1-1430 handles twice the power and is slightly heavier. For cabinets with high SPL demands take the 1430, otherwise the 1425 is enough.

Why is the minimum crossover frequency 2,500 Hz?

Because the lower frequency limit of 2,000 Hz is higher than on the film models and the aluminium diaphragm is more sensitive to overload below it. With 12 dB/oct you should not go below 2,500 Hz. Steeper filters add extra safety.

Which horn is recommended?

A Celestion 1" horn with matching mounting from the 42.audio range, for example the H1SC-8050 for wide dispersion in the near field. Since the crossover is high anyway, the horn does not need to load low; a compact horn will do.
