Celestion CDX1-1430: 1" neodymium driver with aluminium diaphragm, 50 W AES and 108 dB

A 1" driver with 50 W AES and 100 W programme at 0.47 kg: the Celestion CDX1-1430 is the more powerful of the two aluminium-diaphragm models in the CDX1 range. The neodymium magnet drives a 1.4" voice coil of copper-clad aluminium wire, the aluminium diaphragm is fitted with an elastomer surround, and a copper shorting sleeve on the pole piece lowers voice coil inductance. Sensitivity is 108 dB at 8 Ω, the frequency range spans 2,000 Hz to 20,000 Hz.

The shorting sleeve is more than a detail: less inductance means less impedance rise and less roll-off towards high frequencies, which makes the top end more linear and simplifies crossover design. Together with the stiff aluminium diaphragm this gives a driver that resolves very clearly up top and, thanks to the elastomer surround, still does not ring metallically. At 58 mm mounting depth it needs a bit more room behind the horn than the shallow polyimide models but stays compact.

Use and enclosure

Celestion quotes the minimum crossover frequency as 2,500 Hz at 12 dB/oct. For the 1430 that is the same limit as for the smaller 1425 because both share the same diaphragm. With 24 dB/oct in a DSP you can work your way down to 2,500 Hz, with shallower filters you go higher. The 50 W AES is twice the reserve of the 1425 and makes the driver interesting for loud two-way cabinets with mid-woofers up to about 12", provided their beaming at the high crossover frequency is acceptable.

On the horn side the Celestion 1" horns from the 42.audio range fit: H1-7050 'No Bell', H1-9040P, H1SC-8050 and H1SC-9040, each with mounting that matches the driver. Because the crossover is high, the horn does not need to load low; what matters more is that the horn's dispersion at the crossover frequency matches the beaming of the mid-woofer. A limiter in the HF section is still sensible for rental use despite 50 W AES, because it is clipped amplifier signals that destroy aluminium diaphragms, not clean programme material.

What to look out for

  • 50 W AES / 100 W programme at 8 Ω: tolerates a more powerful HF channel, limiter still recommended.
  • 108 dB sensitivity: passive crossovers almost always need an attenuator.
  • Minimum crossover 2,500 Hz at 12 dB/oct, closer with 24 dB/oct.
  • 58 mm mounting depth, 0.47 kg weight.
  • Aluminium diaphragm with elastomer surround and copper shorting sleeve.

Frequently asked questions

When is the CDX1-1430 worth it over the CDX1-1425?

When you need power handling: the 1430 takes twice the power, with the same diaphragm, same sensitivity and same minimum crossover frequency. For loud stage cabinets and rental gear it is the safer choice. At moderate levels the 1425 is enough.

Which woofer suits a crossover at 2,500 Hz?

A mid-woofer that plays cleanly past 2,500 Hz without strong beaming. Smaller cone diameters have the advantage here. With large woofers such a high crossover creates a step in dispersion that you have to cushion with the horn choice.

Which horn do I take?

A Celestion 1" horn with matching mounting at 42.audio, for example the H1-9040P for controlled dispersion or the H1SC-8050. The horn choice depends on the room, throw distance and the beaming of your woofer at the crossover frequency.
