Celestion CDX1-1445: 1" ferrite driver with 1.4" coil, 106 dB and bolt-on mounting

Ferrite magnet, 1.4" voice coil, bolt-on flange: the Celestion CDX1-1445 is the down-to-earth workhorse driver of the CDX series for fixed installation. This 1" compression driver handles 20 W AES (40 W programme), delivers 106 dB sensitivity at 8 Ω and works from 1,500 Hz to 20,000 Hz. The diaphragm is single-piece PETP film with an integrally formed surround; the voice coil is wound from copper-clad aluminium wire.

Two design features matter in practice. First, the diaphragm is combined with the rear cover into one unit, so a diaphragm swap is done in a few steps without alignment, which counts for rental companies and installers. Second, the bolt-on mounting: the driver is fixed to the horn with bolts through the flange rather than screwed on, giving a rigid connection that cannot twist. At 1 kg and 52 mm mounting depth it is, as ferrite drivers are, heavier than its neodymium siblings, but immune to heat and inexpensive.

Use and enclosure

Celestion specifies 2,200 Hz at 12 dB/oct as the minimum crossover frequency. Against the 1,500 Hz lower limit that is half an octave of spacing, which is appropriate at 20 W AES. With 24 dB/oct in an active system you can move a little closer; in passive two-way cabinets stay at 2,200 Hz or above and add an attenuator so that the 106 dB matches the mid-woofer.

The bolt-on mounting fits correspondingly designed 1" horns. 42.audio carries the Celestion horns H1-7050 'No Bell', H1-9040P, H1SC-8050 and H1SC-9040; check on each horn which mounting style it is designed for, because the screw-on version of this driver is called CDX1-1446 and is otherwise identical. Typical applications are installation cabinets, small two-way PA and monitors where serviceability and robustness matter more than weight.

What to look out for

  • 20 W AES / 40 W programme: high-pass from 2,200 Hz at no less than 12 dB/oct, limiter in active use.
  • 106 dB at 8 Ω: passive crossover with resistor network for level matching.
  • Bolt-on flange: combine only with horns that have a bolt-flange interface.
  • 1 kg ferrite, 52 mm mounting depth.
  • Diaphragm and rear cover as one unit, replacement without alignment.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between CDX1-1445 and CDX1-1446?

Only the mounting: the 1445 has a bolt-on flange, the 1446 a screw thread. Power handling, sensitivity, diaphragm, weight and mounting depth are identical. The choice depends purely on the horn you want to use.

How do I replace the diaphragm?

Diaphragm and rear cover form one unit that is removed and replaced as a whole. There is no need to centre the coil in the gap. That makes the driver attractive for rental and installation.

Is 20 W AES enough for a small PA cabinet?

Yes, if the cabinet is run passively or actively with a clean high-pass and the 106 dB sensitivity is put to use. For high continuous levels the CDX series has higher-rated models. The decisive thing is that the amplifier does not clip.
