Celestion CDX1-1446: 1" ferrite compression driver with screw thread, 20 W AES and 106 dB
The Celestion CDX1-1446 is the screw-on version of the CDX1-1445: the same 1" ferrite compression driver with a 1.4" voice coil, but with a threaded connection instead of a bolt-on flange. That makes it fit the many horns with a 1" screw-on interface as found in compact cabinets, installation speakers and retrofit projects. The technical data: 20 W AES (40 W programme), 106 dB sensitivity, 8 Ω, frequency range 1,500 Hz to 20,000 Hz, 1 kg weight, 52 mm mounting depth.
The single-piece PETP film diaphragm with integrally formed surround is joined with the rear cover into one assembly. That has a tangible advantage: when replacing the diaphragm you remove the complete unit and fit the new one without having to centre the coil in the gap. The 1.4" coil of copper-clad aluminium wire offers more winding area than the 1"-coil models of the series and thus more thermal reserve, which is reflected in the 20 W AES.
Use and enclosure
For the crossover the rule is: at least 2,200 Hz at 12 dB/oct, as recommended by Celestion. If you work with a DSP and 24 dB/oct you can push that limit; if you work passively with a shallow filter you should cross higher and match the 106 dB to the mid-woofer with a resistor network. The 1,500 Hz lower limit is not an operating point but the boundary below which the PETP diaphragm should receive no more energy.
The threaded connection goes with horns that have a 1" screw-on interface. Frequently asked questions
Does the CDX1-1446 fit as a replacement in an existing cabinet?
If the horn has a 1" screw-on interface, yes. Make sure the existing crossover cuts at 2,200 Hz or higher with at least 12 dB/oct. With old crossovers using a shallower filter you should recalculate.
How does the CDX1-1446 differ from the CDX1-1445?
Only in the connection: thread on the 1446, bolt-on flange on the 1445. All other data such as 20 W AES, 106 dB, diaphragm, 1 kg and 52 mm mounting depth are the same. Decide by the horn.
Which amplifier do I need?
Little power: with 106 dB sensitivity the driver reaches high SPL with a small channel. More important than watts is that the amplifier does not clip and the high-pass works properly. In active use a limiter is part of the package.
