Celestion CDX1-1447: 1" ferrite driver with polyimide diaphragm, 35 W AES and 106 dB
If you are looking for a ferrite driver with more power handling in the CDX1 range without switching to neodymium, you end up at the Celestion CDX1-1447. This 1" compression driver has a 1.4" voice coil of copper-clad aluminium wire and, unlike its PETP siblings, a single-piece polyimide diaphragm with integrally formed surround. Polyimide withstands higher temperatures, and that is exactly what allows the 35 W AES (70 W programme) with an otherwise similar construction. Sensitivity 106 dB at 8 Ω, frequency range 1,500 Hz to 20,000 Hz.
As with the other ferrite models in the series, diaphragm and rear cover form one unit that can be swapped without alignment. At 1 kg it is on a par with the PETP models, but at 46.5 mm mounting depth it is shallower. The CDX1-1447 is therefore the ferrite driver for cabinets that get worked a little harder: stage monitors, small two-way PA and installations where weight does not matter but the diaphragm has to cope with heat and level peaks.
Use and enclosure
Celestion recommends crossing no lower than 2,200 Hz at 12 dB/oct. With steeper filters you can approach the 1,500 Hz lower limit, with shallow ones stay well above 2,200 Hz. The 35 W AES is a visible gain over the PETP ferrite models but changes nothing about the fact that the high-pass must be clean and the amplifier free of clipping. Passively you almost always need an attenuator because of the 106 dB.
Matching Celestion 1" horns at 42.audio: H1-9040P, H1-7050 'No Bell', H1SC-9040 and H1SC-8050. The horn's mounting style must match the driver; check that on both products before ordering. For monitor wedges a wide-dispersion horn has the advantage because the musician rarely stands exactly on axis, for front cabinets with throw a narrower pattern.

Frequently asked questions
Why polyimide instead of PETP?
Polyimide tolerates higher temperatures at the voice coil and is mechanically more robust. That is why Celestion can rate the CDX1-1447 at 35 W AES where the PETP models sit lower. Sonically it remains a damped film diaphragm without metallic harshness.
Is the CDX1-1447 suitable for stage monitors?
Yes, that is one of its core areas: 106 dB sensitivity, 35 W AES and a heat-resistant diaphragm suit wedges that take level peaks in everyday stage use. Cross at 2,200 Hz or above. A limiter in active use still makes sense.
Which horn fits?
Any Celestion 1" horn with matching mounting, such as the H1-9040P or H1SC-9040 in the 42.audio range. A wide dispersion pattern for monitors, a narrower one for front cabinets. The crossover frequency is high enough that the horn does not have to load low.
